Kids Circuit Bending

YouTube via DrRek. Saw this on Sendling along with this more creative way of bending.

Update: Before you decide to go do this with your kids or even yourself, be sure to read the comments.

Child Fries Fingers Fondling Fisher Price 220volt Outlet.

I child was severely burned after reportedly licking her index and middle finger and then subsequently inserting said fingers into a Fisher Price 220volt power socket in an attempt to 'Circuit Bend' it. Police say that it was an apparent suicide attempt and that all parents should monitor their children very closely as this growning phenomenom sweeps the world.

  3. I sure hope that girl washed her hands after touching the soldered contacts on that 40 pin IC. Lead is a nasty, nasty poison that in very small quantities causes learning disabilities and all sorts of other problems, especially in kids whose brains are still developing.

  4. You guys are making circuit bending appear to be so dangerous!

As long as it is supervised, i'm sure the children will enjoy it. Circuit Bending is fun, every child wants to find out how things work, and why they work that way. Adding their own touch just makes it that much better. I really enjoy seeing kids making their own instruments and making sounds they have never heard before.

  5. The problem here is that not only doesn't it teach electronics, what's happening to the circuit can't be explained easily to the child either.
They walk away believing it's ok to touch or short out electronics.
Then they tell their friends about it and they try it out on something too.

  6. I think the lead issue is a huge one. People teaching and promoting circuit bending without warning of the dangers of lead are being incredibly irresponsible. One common technique that i have seen taught with no precautions is to lick your fingers and touch the solder points. Then lick them again and touch some more. Never mind that you are eating lead. Just because it doesnt kill you immediately doesnt make it safe. Ever wonder why all of Europe has banned lead in electronic products? And the amount of lead in solder is usually around 60% whereas the amount of lead in dangerous lead based paint is only around 10%. I guess when you base a hobby on ignorance this is the result. Sad.

  7. Folks, metallic lead is not ingested that way. If it is swallowed, it just goes right through. If you could get poisoned just from touching lead, every plumber, TV repairman, and stained-glass artist who ever lived would have died of lead poisoning. Lead paint is poisonous because it contains soluable lead salts. Metallic lead is not very soluable and is unlikely to cause poisoning (unless you boil it and inhale the vapor).

  8. "Do you think they would be this excited if they were brought around a table and shown the basic principles of DC electronics?"

Then show them a Tesla coil.

Fact is, children are unpredictable and do things when not being watched.
Some parents found this out after their kids mimic'd Saddam's hanging.
    They found the hard way.

  9. If there is high levels of lead in these lunch containers.....you gotta believe that licking a finger and touching a solder joint must be worse....

it's not an issue to take lightly especially with children who cannot pass lead through their digestive system like adults can

  10. ok peter, i can agree that SOME learning is happening here, but you highlight exactly what i was suggesting. IMHO "plenty" of learning would include some safety guidance, which has been totally ignored in my experiences with these type of workshops. many of you are suggesting that kids will loose interest if we don't skip the boring safety information and get straight to ingesting hazardous materials. i think that is pretty sad. why would fun and safety be mutually exclusive? this extends beyond just children. what about pregnent women who unknowingly cause brain damage, or miscarriages by contact with lead? why be optimistic that it will all work out and everyone will manage to avoid the dangers?

    it comes down to this:

Why not include safety information with the various other lessons these kids are learning? and why not include warnings of the dangers on web postings?
