Yamaha AN1x

Title link takes you to shots pulled via this auction.

I just realized Yamaha has been sorely lacking in the VA market the last couple of years compared to the two other biggies, Roland and Korg. I wonder if they have anything cooking... The AN1X was one of the better sounding VAs. The knobs stepped like a train off it's tracks, but it did sound good. It's the only VA that sounds like a CS50/CS60/CS80 to me.

  1. Does the AX1 have the same engine as the AN200?

  2. Engines almost exactly the same. But exactly. Some tiny waveform differences. There may be other differences. Nothing to big. The AN200 is derived from the PL expansion board I think. The AN200 has less polyphony too I hear.

    The An1x came first.

  3. Dunno about the tiny waveform differences, but it is my understanding that an AN-200 literally contains the PLG 150-AN expansion board. You can pull it right out and stick it in a Motif. Be careful when buying a used AN-200 since occasionally this has happened already.

The AN-200 synth section is 5 note polyphonic and the AN1X is 10 note poly.

For the prices they are going for these days, the AN1X is a fantastic deal. Very powerful and great sounding synth. I love mine. It also has a pretty nice, quiet keybed compared to some other less expensive synths.

  4. I really do like the sound of the AN200's synth engine. I can get some truly sick and thick noises out of it. I absolutely hate the manual though which is possibly the worst manual I've ever been forced to deal with im my life.
