Comment Moderation

Update:And comment moderation if off. New rule. If you find a comment offensive you can request it to be removed. How do you do this? You post anonymously requesting the specific comment be removed and I will remove it. If you don't want your comment removed, figure out how to communicate more effectively.

I just enabled comment moderation. You can still post anonymously and I will be pretty liberal. Anyone with an account should not notice much of a change aside from a slight delay between when you comment and I click the publish button to make your comment live. If you can stand behind your opinion, you have a right to share it in my book, however if you become a consistent nuisance to others, including me, I will moderate your comments. So far NO ONE with an account has crossed that line. Anonymous comments that are constructive, humorous, or other will continue to come through. I don't want to deny any of the entertainment, however anything I identify as trolling or overly offensive will not go through. Again, I plan to be pretty liberal and a troll to you may not be a troll to me, so I'm going to enforce a simple rule. If you want what you perceive to be an anonymous troll comment removed, you can post your own anonymous comment to request that comment be removed and I will consider removing it. If I don't I will comment why. For example not everyone has the same taste or expectations and/or if removal of that comment will cause further comments to lose context they will most likely not be removed. However further trolling will not make it through.

  2. well, having just gone through the process of posting a "moderated" comment, I will say it's pretty anti-climactic to write a whole nice comment, and then not be rewarded with a post....it simply says "Comment moderation has been enabled. All comments must be approved by the blog author."...... kind of a let down and definitely not the instant gratification I have come to know and love from ye olde internets.
I do hate trolls, but, I read this blog multiple times daily and have never once seen a comment I found offensive or destructive. I have seen some here and there that were a bit out of place, but that's to be expected in a public forum. I mean of course, if you grow a mullet and post a youtube of yourself playing van halen licks on an FM7 then send it to matrix, some people are going to give you a hard time and make some bad comments in the comments, but you probably deserved it.
anyways, just a few more cents from me, I'll stop now.

  3. so have you fixed the verification thing too. every single post i have ever made has failed the first time and made me enter a new second code to actually post a comment. kind of annoying. doesn’t anyone else have this problem?

  4. this is a test of the comment moderation system. had this been a real comment that was worth being moderated, it probably wouldnt get through. but since its not, it probably will. again, this is only a test.

even though ive only posted anonymously since i dont have an account (and cause i dont want one) i think this is a good idea and should have happened a long time ago. im surprised it took you so long matrix. now how about posting idiots IP addresses?

  10. Internet trolls, like film critics and mosquitoes, are things we all have to live with, but their sting often spreads infectious disease.

As someone who is trying to keep clear of setting up new web accounts, I appreciate being able to post without being signed in.

I think moderation is a better option than disabling anonymous or non-user posting altogether.

Good luck with your pest control!

  11. I can see moderating anonymous posts, but doing it for registered users is just going to make them post less. Of course, if that's your plan...q

  12. Regarding registered user having to go through moderation, all I can say is Blogger sucks in this regard. It's either on or off. There is no membership option at this point in the sense you can join to post comments. The only membership option is to actually post and I'm not going to open that up here. That's what Synthwire is for.

As for the annoyance of comment moderation, I thought of it to. I kind of hate the thought of comments sitting in limbo while I sleep. I can turn it off.

I don't want to turn off anonymous comments becuase a lot of useful info comes in and I do not want to punish the majority for the minority.

The way I see it is we have three options. 1) Comment moderation, 2) I can go with a 3rd party comment system that allows me to ban by IP, 3) we go back to having it wide open and I give everyone free reign to delete comments.

How do I give free reign? It's simple. You just post an anonymous comment asking the offending comment to be removed. I give that power to you, and of course I have the power to remove comments at will.

Let me know what you think.

    ReplyDelete
  13. BTW, the problem with a 3rd party solution is the comments will no longer be part of this actual blog. This mean that if that company goes under the comments might go with it.

  14. OK, I turned it off. New rule. If you find a comment offense you can have it deleted. How? Post an anonymous comment requesting the comment to be removed. If you don't want your comments removed, figure out how to communicate more effectively.

  15. As for word verification, I haven't heard too many reports of it being a problem although I have received a couple. Unfortunately this isn't something I can control. It's part of Blogger.

  16. wow...look i'm not an anon anymore.....

    :)

Feels just like 8th grade when i finally gave in the the cool kids and made fun the losers on the playground

    now i'm cool for life

  17. I'm pretty sure blogger has an option for requiring registration to comment, as I've seen people do it on other blogs and yes I'm sure it wasn't a third party comment box. If you can make it happen it would be cool with me.

  18. Where have all the anon's gone...
    Long time posting...
Where have all the anon's gone...
    Oh wait, they're back....

    :)

(I didn't like the comment moderation.)

  19. Yes you can set Blogger to require registration, but why spoil the party for everyone for a few lousy trolls? I'll just delete their comments when I see them. If you don't want your comments deleted, simply register. That's not too difficult now is it?

    ReplyDelete
  20. > Yes you can set Blogger to require registration, but why spoil the party for everyone for a few lousy trolls

Because if you don't register you support The Terrorists.

  21. cool! glad to see it back to normal... PLEASE DO NOT EVER remove annon posting though, that would kill it.... alot of people, like me, are too lazy to make an account (or just dont want one), so you're right, matrix would be losing a lot of valuable input.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I for one am glad that Matrix is leaving the anonymous posting option alone. Frankly, I just don't feel like posting under my usual name and then having to deal with the discussion that would likely start to ensue from that point forward. It's much easier, both from my standpoint and I think for Matrix, if certain of us can say what we have to say without our identities 'stirring the pot' rather than whatever comments we might make being taken strictly at their face value.
