The quote says it sounds like nothing else... Well it does sound like something else, two Korg 700S synths as it shares nearly all same circuits. Actually though Korg did a sneaky bit of cost cutting, a 700S has 2 vcos (=4 if you have two of them) but one 800DV has a total of 2 VCOs and 2 sub oscs which means you can add octaves but can't do a 4 VCO sound or a layered ring mod sound (only one ringmod total). You do get the circuit that can delay one "synth" or layer or do a duophonic thing but the sound generation isn't exactly double the 700S.
ReplyDeleteYou do get 2 HP and 2 LP filters... err I mean "Travelers" so that's double great - way more than a typical LPF of the day x2. What's really interesting is while they claim it's doing saw and pulse waves the actual shapes are very "wrong" and indeed unique to these early Korgs. Probably the most beautiful high pitched sustained sounds I've heard from a synth. Play the same pitch with a CEM VCO and you'll not be very pleased (though you might love your CEM-based synth's filters, etc.)
Even if you don't care for Kitaro listen to his early 80s stuff (he still uses them, just not on almost every track like the early 80s). Listen to the higher tones he gets out of these early Korgs, and this was the most deluxe.
