$1,041.96 Synth Book

Just saw this on the-gas-station. Allen Strange's "Electronic Music: Systems, Techniques, and Controls (Paperback)" on Amazonfor $1041.96. Or you can get it electronically for $15.29 here and print it out yourself.

  1. OK, this is definitely the RAR COLECTABLE W0W event horizon here. This is a BOOK. It's not even a piece of gear. Granted, it's a very useful book, to be sure, but it's still a BOOK. And someone wants as much for it at certain synths. Insane.

The slogan "Information wants to be free" keep coming to mind. I think the situation with this book has reached that point. Time for someone to put it up in hi-res scans for free download on some .ru server until this thing finally comes back into print (or, better, into an updated 3rd edition). I advocate the hell out of this plan, because it's certainly reached a point where Allan Strange isn't getting any profit off of the book's insane overhypage, and it would be of more benefit to his scholarship on it for the book to be available to a much wider readership/user base.

  2. Wow.. I have a print of this with the 45 which is included. I paid 120 bucks, and I thought that was robbery. It was in perfect condition though.

  4. remember that asking prices arent necessarily sale prices. unfortunately thats something some people dont realize. so you may see others posting their copies for similar prices now because of this joker. that often contributes to inflation.

  5. Yeah, theres a reason why that $1000 copy has been on amazon for over a year and has not sold. Because the seller just pulled a ridiculous price out of the air.

  8. Lame, I got a 2nd edition (updated with even more info) in great condition for $65 on Amazon. Patience is key, reasonably priced copies do show up from time to time. Great book, btw!

  9. I don't buy the 'hack' label somuch.

His work is very 'in the moment', and has qualities which I like.

But, by no means is he the only poet in the collection.

  14. I sell books for hundreds and thousands of dollars all the time. Supply and demand.

But this looks to be a drop shipper, hoping some idiot will buy it at that price and then buying a cheaper copy and sending it to them.

  17. My theory is it's not aimed at synth collectors but academic or scholarly books ever so often get on aqusition lists of deep pocketed institution libraries and so Amazon Sellers who think they might win the jackpot if someone has to aquire it when they have the only copy. As seen, they are usually thwarted by someone else just charging a high but realistic price. I also believe some very specialized technical and science books are actually normally published in small numbers at huge prices. So perhaps there is also a connection in passing off a hard to get out of print book as one of these specialized initially high priced texts.
