One of the most underated analog polysynths. I love mine. Why anybody would buy a Little Phatty or Voyager over this beats me. It an incredibly versatile beast of a machine, and is polyphonic to boot. If you haven't taken the time, check one out before they're gone for good and you're having to shop for a used one on Ebay.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all. Thanks for this video. Yes the A6 is amazing. People buy only what is hyped, and Alesis is doing nothing to hype it.
ReplyDeleteI always asked myself why someone buy a Virus TI when for the same price he can buy a REAL 16 voice analog. The A6 can sound smooth or really really agressive and acid.
And yes for the price of a new Little Phatty you can buy a 2nd hand A6. Another problem is that A6 user doesn't share videos or demo like a lot of kids does with the LP (look mom I have a moog !).
So... wake up ppl...

ReplyDeletegreat for prog rock, bad for trance and fast tempo stuff. i think the fx make it sound very digital. it sounds kind of metalic all the time. sometimes its moog like. but not really, it lacks the warmth. doesnt sound vintage. and to me it sounds like dco with sluggish modulations. lame envs.
i can get a little phatty for 1000. but i do think the a6 is better than the phatty, and the new moog. because i find the new moog stuff to be super dull on the high end frequencies. it lacks the bite of the old moogs.
but man, this is a great a6 demo. its worth owning. but dont think for a second that it can replace mono synths. it cannot.
good synth, but not the end all be all.

ReplyDeleteHaving owned an A6 for a couple of years it amazes me that it doesn't get a bit more attention, it's a great synth and capable of such a vast array of sounds. Yes, it can sound digital (why is that a bad thing?) but it can also sound like a lovely old vintage synth.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to hear and see demos of what others are doing with theirs and often gives me a few ideas of new avenues to explore.
I don't quite understand why people want to compare the A6 and new Moogs, I've got a Voyager and love it to bits but it's a completely different beast altogether to the A6.

ReplyDeleteSome very nice sounds in that trance sample. People really get hung up on gear and what people say it's good for.
ReplyDeleteStatements like, "not good for x genre" are pretty poorly informed and tied to personal aesthetics/preferences and perhaps narrow definitions on what is good or representative of a particular genre.
I don't know if it's the mp3 compression, but that trance demo sounds pretty harsh, and yes, digital to me. More like a VA. Not that there's anything wrong with digital/VA sound...but coming from an analog?

ReplyDeleteIt could do a lot with the effects that he is using. That and applying some FM modulation via a noise source will harshen things up a bit.
On top of that, the Andromeda gives users various options for tuning. Turn off automatic tuning for a more vintage, voltage controlled, sound. Leave on all tuning routines for a more "modern" sound.

IMO all this talk about whether the A6 should sound like jupiter/moog or any other vintage analog synth, "sounds digital or VA" blaah blaah is totally unnecessary. Just use any synth which can make the sounds you're happy with or don't buy the synth if you don't like it.
Andromeda just happened to be in front of me when I programmed those sounds and imo it works perfectly for trance. The sound is dirtier and more alive compared to VA synths, a very big difference which you'll hear when you actually use the synth. Fits easier into a mix. Btw, Ferry Corsten, Tiesto, Armin, John 00 Fleming and many others use A6 alot these days.
For me, it doesn't really matter whether I use an analog synth or a virtual analog synth if I just get the sound I want. If you start thinking about what kind of gear you use and what kind of sounds you're allowed to program with your synth because it's analog or not analog or whether the sound should be closer to jupiter/moog to be acceptable or something, you're imo wasting your time. :)

It can be fun to discuss this and that about a synth but to say one is better then another or digital sounding is beyond me. Buy the stuff you like and make some music. In the end if you're making good music and programming good sounds I bet none of you all could say what synth was or wasn't being uesd.

ReplyDeleteplenty of 303 clones for the trance/dance genre, the A6 is for players who play their instruments,yeah it's not an instrument that plays itself, ya got to tweak it man.
ReplyDeleteNot that it can't "play itself", with its sequencer and arpeggiator, and what not. Good luck replicating those modulation sequences by hand!

ReplyDeleteRememeber that the A6 preset were done to fight the Access Virus. That's was the WRONG way to show how it sounds.
Do you want real analog, old style, sounds?
Well:
1) switch off the FX
2) switch off the autotuning
3) Init a sounds and switch off all the extra modulation.
4) Start with 1 OSC then add what you want.
That's what I normally do. My A6 preset are really really really ANOLOG. I have a Moog Voyager RME too and the A6 is not sounding "less analog" or digital in comparison. The A6 is an awesome analog synth and it kick ass to all the VA out there and to a lot of other hyper-hyped old analogs.
Just stop your mouth and tweak it.
