Recuerdos de la Alhambra played on a French Connection

YouTube via stretta.
"After watching the Jean Laurendeau Ondes Martenot video on youtube, I was inspired to seek out an Analogue Systems French Connection controller. It so happens that I came across a used unit, so I jumped on it. I received it two days ago and I was eager (perhaps too eager) to contribute a demo of my new toy to youtube. Yes, my intonation is questionable. My apologies.

All the music was generated exclusively with a (primarily Doepfer) modular synthesizer, one monophonic line at a time. This exercise is somewhat of a test balloon for a long form modular project I'm currently sketching out."

  1. This is actually Recuerdos de la Alhambra composed by Francisco Tárrega.

  2. That is a very cool demo.
This sometimes sounds as a Theremin as you intended but I also think that it sometimes sonuds similar to a a musical saw when notes are bent.
    Thanks again for this.

  3. Matrix - you're insane. I started that video upload and then went to bed. I wake up, and you've blogged it.

Fitting, I guess, as I came across the Jean Laurendeau from matrixsynth. So, I wouldn't have a French Connection if it were not for this blog.

  4. Very nice! Your intonation is actually quite respectable for only having had the instrument two days.

  5. Onderiffic.

I was secretly relieved when my Peterson tuner broke. Now we just have those little Korgs all over the place.

  6. Cool sound - very expressive.

    Backing track is great, too.

  7. Very cool track, and very cool device, but I cant justify the pricetag. Assuming you already have a midi or cv keyboard, a doepfer ribbon controller and volume pedal could get a lot of the Ondes controller work done, no?

  8. I agree they're too expensive, but part of that is due to the expense and overhead of an imported item. Even considering that, it is still too expensive. I guess because they're hand-made, and sell to a very, very small market could have something else to do with it. I'm glad I was able to find one used.

You can articulate notes with a left hand section of any synth really by routing the modulation controller to the VCA. Even a Juno 60 can do this. I prefer the Roland-style paddle for this. You can get pretty good at it.

I suspect the ballistics of the French Connection button does not match exactly the Ondes Martenot. I think the original has more bounce and maybe a lighter touch to produce the range of effects I've observed in the Ondes Martenot videos. Regardless, I'd personally like to see more physical objects or contraptions generating triggers and control voltages to hook into a modular; devices that observe a scale of physics known to the human body. Cranks, levers, things that bounce and react to touch.

  9. its always funny when people know "exactly" what they want for their long term modular project.....cuz i clearly have no idea where mine is going.....
