  1. i know his secret. really, he's even explicitly said it in interviews what the "Loveless" sound is. and yet i've listened to so many shoegaze bands, and none of them have gotten it. any guesses? :)

  3. That genuinely reminded me I need to have a set of spare keys made for my front door. Who says noisecore isn't edifying?

And yeah, was hoping for the other Kevin Shields as well. :-/

  4. Uhh, I can hardly wait for the extended remix. But I think they were slightly out of tune...

Christian, do you mean the SPX90 reverse reverb program?

  6. tell us the secret. "loveless" is an album that brings tears to my eyes because it sounds so beautiful.

  7. guitars:
I've read that while "Loveless" may sound like a million guitars layered up that Kevin would actually spend days getting the right mic placement / tone and only record a couple of guitars. Another key to the guitar sound is the Fender Blender pedal. Lets not forget the whammy bar on a Fender Jazzmaster or Jaguar...

    drums:
I think in the same article it said that the drummer wasn't so hot so they sampled him and programmed the drums. In my view the drums are mixed more so you feel the groove then rather then hear them up front in the mix.

    vocals:
I've had success emulating their vocal sound by focusing on certain syllables and not really words.

    mixing:
Check out their mixes on a plugin that shows you frequency response. That'll show you a lot too...

  8. The 33 1/3 series book on "Loveless" is excellent... definitely buy it if you're a fan, it describes in detail what the poster above me is talking about.

And yes, he insists they did not stack guitars... and most the drums are hand programmed in a sampler because the drummer was chronically sick and unable to play.

  9. Tape-op magazine did an interview with Kevin Shields a couple of years ago where he went through his recording process and some songs in detail.

  10. Instead of whining about it not being the 'real' Kevin Shields, why don't you actually WATCH what this chick is doing: It's actually pretty amazing,if you hang with it and see the pay off!

  11. "Christian, do you mean the SPX90 reverse reverb program?"

:) oh yes, you are correct. any reverse reverb algo. should work. blending out the dry signal is often nesc.

i think 99% of people who read an interview with kevin shields assumed that he ment reverse delay and not reverb (after all who could one reverse a reverb ;)). such a neat sound if you've never tried it.

BTW, this band Kevin Shields is fucking rad. three girls, very noisy. they were supposed to play with me in phila, but i think my buddy who was supposed to set up the show dropped the ball on setting it up. he is the person with the cat on the Odyssey tatooed on his arm, so if you hated that, and/or live in Phila and wanted to see this band, feel free to bitch.

those 33 1/3 books are great, if you haven't read the Velvet Underground and Nico one do it, it was written by my firend Joe Harvard

  12. I saw Kevin Shields live a few weeks ago. Basically what she's doing is micing a home made mechanism on which there are about 4 tape reels and spinning it with ferocity. The more "tuned" instrument in the beginning is some 80s kid's toy through distortion and delay.

I don't know who the "real" Kevin Shields is, sorry.
