"Rich, warm, swirlling textures are created with 32 knobs, 47 buttons, and many many MIDI controllable cross modulations(pan, pulse width, osc sync, even "analog" FM. Bright, M1 size green display, with a simple user interface. 3 LFO's(triangle, forward and reverse sawtooth, and random, with a sample and hold feature for generating "computeresque" LFO sounds or a square LFO) Up to 6 oscillators (Triangle, Sawtooth, Pulse Width) per voice. Oberheim Filter(with adjustable resonance, hipass, lowpass, and bandpass), plus a "Mini-Moog" style 24 Db resonant low-pass filter. Signal to Noise ratio is EXCELLENT(better than some "super-clean" digital synths), around 88-92 db for most patches."

wow, it looks crowded.
ReplyDeletethe ob-mx is complete hype. never have i heard so many talk well about such a completely useless synth. i bought one a couple years back after hearing many glowing reviews, then sold it less than 3 weeks later. steer clear of this thing, it's a total mess: "One historical point is that the OB-Mx is, at present, the last synthesizer designed by Don Buchla. Buchla has sort of disowned this unit, though. Its filters are actually pretty bad. They don't manage to emulate either the 2-pole Oberheim or 4-pole Moog filters In fact they sound notoriously thin and tweezy. The so-called 'Oberheim filter' provides 12 dB/oct low, band or hi pass filtering, with resonance. And the 'Minimoog filter' uses a meatier 24 dB/oct low-pass filter. "
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's a mixed bag. I remember when I first played one in a GC back when they were out. I wasn't impressed at all, rather disappointed, but I kept thinking there might be more to it. Brian Kehew of the Moog Cookbook sent in some sample of it and I was finally impressed. It was a "there it is" moment; it finally sounded good to me. So... I don't know. I think it's one of those synths you have to spend time with to find the sweet spots. One of these days I'd like to sit down with one and have some time exploring it.
ReplyDeleteYou can find Brian's sample and some others within these posts.
I played with one with the latest OS.
ReplyDeleteAnd i really liked it.
I remember what a let down this was, I thought it was going to be the synth of doom, the hype was huge, unfortunately it's sound wasnt :(
ReplyDeleteI hear the Metasonix filters really bring out the inner soul of this baby.
ReplyDeleteAside from what a let down it is, does anyone else find it suspicious that the seller has zero feedback, no refereces, and requests to be contacted outside of ebay at a private email? Sounds like the start of most scam stories I have heard.
ReplyDeleteOB-Mx is definitely not a synth for lazy musicians, or those who have limited knowledge and imagination as how to create their own sounds. As a producer I have worked with
ReplyDeletea few musicians who created wonderful sounds with OB-Mx. I am the one who posted the ad on Ebay and I have no experience with Ebay, because I haven't used it.
That's why I have "zero feedback". But I am not an anonymous person,
nor I am a scam. The reason I want to sell my OM-Mx is, because I changed my profession and I need the money.
