  3. I just bought an A6 new 2 days ago and love it, its unlike any other synth I have had in the fact that it is analog with 2 filters and I can get CS80,Oberheim,JP8 like sounds out of it....as you will hear the presets are shite , making your own sounds is the best way to make this beast shine

  4. And why exactly do the presets on commercial synths always suck? I don't understand it. Do they not want to show off the capabilities of the unit they spent so much r/d money on? When I'm demoing a synth at the local shop, I want to hear it at it's best. Why can't they pay top programmers to make these things shine? Worse yet, some of them do, and the presets STILL seem to suck. Someone please explain this to me. Can anyone name one recent commercial synth that came with great/usable presets?

The Access Virus TI has zillions of useful presets.

The Voyager I got has banks and banks of sounds, and I use those as a starting point.

Just how long did you spend with your Andromeda before you decided that it was a horrible synth? Your comments here tend to give some credit to the people who said that you hated it simply because you didn't know how to use it.

  8. Presets don't always suck. For example, Eric Persing's D-50 presets were slathered over every movie and CD release from 1987-1988. Their overexposure made the D-50 itself a cliche.

The Yamaha VL-1 presets probed most of the useful corners of the instrument.

Korg instruments like the Triton seemed loaded with musically-useful presets.

With gobs and gobs of preset slots available today, some of the patches that would be discarded are now thrown in. Choosing 64 cool presets is one thing. Filling up 640 is another. I'd rather have 640 and choose which ones are right for me.

Another problem is you can't please everyone. People are looking for different things in presets. What might be great to one person would cause someone else to roll their eyes.

I don't really understand why people get so upset about 'good' or 'bad' synthesizers. There isn't one synth that does it all. Face it. Some people will like it, others will not. While there are similarities shared among instruments technically, what kinds of sounds arise *naturally* or with relative ease become the synthesizer's 'voice' That isn't to say synth A can't do searing leads or roaring basses - it just means it might take more work to make it do those kinds of sounds. You can either spend your time programming and learning something, or if your time is more important than money, buy an instrument where those sounds arise more naturally or spontaneously. You can spend hours making an ESQ or a Kurzweil approach the sound of a 303, or, you can simply buy a 303.

Sometimes I think our lives are so empty we need something to argue about. Or maybe we need to make ourselves feel important. Or maybe we want to seek attention. But the flamewars that are generated by synth x vs synth y are of miniscule importance in the grand scheme of things. The person listening to your music could give a crap what synth you used.

I think that goes without saying, but there are some synths (ie. Andromeda) where almost everyone agrees it doesn't properly represent the synths capabilities.

"Or maybe we need to make ourselves feel important. Or maybe we want to seek attention."

and whose attantion are you seeking for making YOUR argument?
