New monomes are Coming

No that actually isn't the new monome. Via the monome site:
"this mold is used to make the little conductive rings in the new keypad design. we were optimistic and a bit ahead of ourselves with our projected release date (posted vaguely and quietly on the forums some time ago.) we currently expect to ship the two fifty six (256) mid-october. we will take pre-orders two weeks before. the good news is that the 128 and 64 will follow close behind (6-8 weeks.)

pricing (USD):
* two fifty six: $1400
* one twenty eight: $800
* sixty four: $450"

Via CDM where you will find more monome goodness including images, video and some pretty nice DIY.

  1. I've always kind of wanted a monome, but is there any point in trying to use it with hardware? I would need a computer between the monome and the synth... too much latency?

  2. If you're even asking the question, then yes, too much latency. It isn't the right product for you.

  3. Yes, you need a computer. If you use the right software (Max/MSP, Ableton, etc.) then latency is not an issue.

    Monome rules. Greatest controller ever.

  4. I wonder if they've addressed the lack of velocity or pressure sensitivity on the buttons on the new models.

    At best, they squandered an opportunity for another expression vector. At worst, they relegated the 40h to the realm of 'trigger devices', not 'musical instrument'

  5. Max's scheduler polls MIDI events at 1ms intervals, and that is before the MIDI data goes out the MIDI interface.

    If I've learned anything from the interenets, it is 1ms latency will curve your spine, cause hair to sprout painfully from your eyeballs, and prevent your music from enjoying the mass acceptence it so rightly deserves.

  6. Ahh, another person with a tiny tiny box for their brain telling them only what instruments aren't instead of what things -could- be.

    Poor little brain!
