"Excited to share MDPatch, second of a series of Elektron Randomizers for Monome Norns. It is now available free for the Monome community. This one’s been a real labor of love, built in collaboration with my friend @syntheticjudah, founder of Machine Store—the same force behind the recent resurrection of +Drive support for legacy Elektron machines.

MDPatch is a patch randomizer and performance tool designed specifically for the Elektron Machinedrum, running on Norns. You can explore, randomize, and control synth parameters in real-time via MIDI. It’s a great way to breathe new life into old machines and spark unexpected sounds.

MDPatch came out of countless late-night sessions digging into the legacy Elektrons and wishing for a more playful, exploratory way to shape sounds without diving through menus. With Norns as the brain and MIDI as the bridge, this tool lets you sculpt, mutate, and chance upon new patches in a really immediate way.

We’ve structured it around a 16-page layout—each one corresponding to a track of the Machinedrum and you can find subpages (SYNTH, EFFECTS , ROUTING). You can toggle parameters for randomization, send new patches instantly, and keep that sweet hands-on Elektron flow intact.

Marble & can piezo: A piezo pickup is attached to the underside of a tin can filled with marbles, routed into the ‪@ChaseBlissAudio‬ MOOD MK II for reverb and micro-looping.

Noise box: Fed through ‪@strymon‬ NIGHTSKY for filtering and reverb.

Field Kit: Mixes an FM-radio feed with noise from Mutable Instruments Braids, then sends the blend into Clouds for granular processing."

"A piece built from the sounds of a forest in Amsterdam and the Prophet-10. Field recordings of the woods blend with effect-processed nylon-guitar textures and gentle electronic drones.

Prophet-10: Performed and recorded with blueSky reverb, with additional reverb added later in the DAW.

Nylon guitar: First recorded into the DAW, then re-amped through an NTS-3 and MOOD MK II for further processing."

"A piece created with a tape loop, Norns Shield, ‪@teenageengineering‬ OP-1 field, and Omnisphere. Piano recorded to tape drifts into haze as it is broken apart, while minimal piano and soft harmonies surface.

Tape loop: About one minute of piano was recorded to tape. During playback it runs through the BOUNDS delay on the Norns Shield and is further treated with reverb and filtering in ‪@strymon‬ NIGHTSKY.

OP-1 field: A simple harmony is recorded and looped.

Ableton Live: Adds a minimal piano phrase from software synths, feedback textures, and additional processing."

"When a friend came back from Costa Rica with some binaural recordings of birds, I asked him to send me some. For this example, I added a loop to the norns and played a melody with the minichord (MIDI notes of strings section from MxSamples on norns)"

"I’ve been deep-diving into Elektron gear for a couple years, and recently that obsession has taken on a new shape through coding on the Monome Norns. I wanted to share something I’ve been working on: a patch randomizer for the Monomachine called MNMPatch.

This is about exploring the untapped corners of the Monomachine’s sound engine. I love the unpredictability that Elektron gear allows, and writing this script became a way to extend that philosophy into my creative process. There’s something magical about letting a machine surprise you.

MNMPatch lives on Norns and lets you selectively randomize pages of parameters (SYNTH, FILTER, AMP, etc.), so you can coax happy accidents or just start from a fresh sonic place. It’s already led me to sounds I wouldn’t have dialed in manually, and will become part of my daily jam ritual."

Nature ambient music with synths feat. Lines script

"Lines is a beautiful Norns script which is very random but so beautiful in its randomness. The combination with the Makenoise 0-coast, Digitone 2 and some birds in the background results something very natural, meditative and linked with the forest.
I found Digitone 2 is even better than the OG version, adding virtual analog tones with so much texture and character. In this case the music flows by itself with nothing prerecorded except the birds. .
I love the way 0-coast reacts by its random oscillator and provides those spontaneous sounds like bugs and birds. Project (2024 p32)

On the norns shield, I use DRONECASTER to generate a 283 Hz drone, which is fed into the ‪@ChaseBlissAudio‬ MOOD MK II for reverb and stretch effects.

The Lyra-8 produces sounds between drone and noise by pressing its keys and using feedback from the MOD DELAY.

On the OP-1 field, I perform a synth part with the CWO effect applied.

The Prophet-10 plays a sparse synth pad that mixes in noise oscillators."

On the Prophet‑10, I play a slow‑attack synth pad mixed with noise oscillators.

On the Norns Shield, I launch the “sines” engine and perform via Grid, routing the output through ‪@ChaseBlissAudio‬ MOOD MK II and ‪@gfisys‬ SPECULAR TEMPUS. I adjust the MOOD MK II’s CLOCK parameter to change the pitch of the sines.

The drums are constructed in the DAW by editing recorded sounds and layering samples.'

"Using two cassette players—one for recording and the other for playback—creates a delay effect. In the video, the Marantz player is both recording and playing back, while the Walkman is only playing back. The main sound is generated using some scripts from the Norns Shield by Monome."

On norns, I create sequence phrases with awake, and the output is routed through ‪@ChaseBlissAudio‬ LOSSY and ‪@gfisys‬ SPECULAR TEMPUS. The sequence phrases are dynamically modified using grid. I change the timbre with awake and further process the sound with filters on LOSSY, while SPECULAR TEMPUS applies delay."
