larping as a skin-walker (NORNS perception 0.6 DESCRIPTIVE JAM)

video upload by tworoundrobins

"perception is a script I'm currently working on and I thought I'd give a little presentation what it's all about, since I find the aspect of time perception in animals really interesting. the main idea came from a Ben Jordan's video on the subject and further reading about CFF and temporal resolution. if you'd like to give it a spin follow the gitHub link!

thank you so much for sticking around. enjoy!

mistake in video: should be Benn Jordan, not Ben. Apologies!"

ambient talkie: ep 37 - norns & data sonification

video upload by tworoundrobins

"i always try to find interesting ways of generating sound...here is where data sonification comes in. although this is quite a new topic for me and I'll definitely dive deeper, just to satisfy my curiosity if nothing else, I thought that giving a quick overview on some data sonification based scripts might make a nice little episode. enjoy!

lil ambient sesh - *moving day* (NORNS rachim JAM)

video upload by tworoundrobins

"deep apologies, but no talkie this week. I heavily underestimated how much work moving flats would take me...I did manage to record a short jam however and will be returning to talkies next week! thank you for your patience and and thank you for sticking around!

i'm using a new script by infinitedigits called rachim and it sounds massive! it's using it's own SC engine and the ears don't fool you - it does sound absolutely wonderful. do give it a spin!

it's what kept me sane (PLINKY & NORNS JAM)

video upload by tworoundrobins

"always wanted a plinky but since they weren't available until it became open source, I hadn't had the pleasure of trying out one. Mikalojus Smulskis from SoundNest made a whole batch and seeing the opportunity I quickly jumped on it and got myself this wonderful little device."

ambient talkie: ep 33 - NORNS standard vs shield

video upload by tworoundrobins

"due to popular demand, here are my personal thoughts on norns shield and norns standard. where do they differ? what are their similarities? etc...

i try to present my experience with both devices and hopefully this will give you a bit of a clue when deciding which one might be the right for you.

sadly, as of publishing this video, I believe that due to worldwide chip shortages monome is not offering any more norns shields. however, you can build one yourself.

best to start simple (NORNS orgnwrms JAM)

video upload by tworoundrobins

"this little script is a powerhouse and still one of the best ways to use solely norns with a grid. shape the orgn sound and just throw it into the wacky delay lines of wrms - i find this quite enjoyable and at times almost magical. this is not jamuary, but rather a jam in good fun where noodles are literally the only things on the menu.

bloom

video upload by infinitedigits

https://github.com/schollz/bloom

this script aims to replicate the “bloom” app by Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers that was released in 2008. the major functionality persists: clicking on the grid / screen will create circles and sounds that grow and disappear. multiple touches will create sequences that also eventually fade away. the sounds belong to scales with alien names like "ambrette", "benzoin", "bergamot", "labdanum", "neroli", "orris", "tolu", "vetiver", and "ylang" - all which were painstakingly captured from the original app (PARAMS > scale). also, like the app, the norns script has an “evolve when idle” function (PARAMS > evolve when idle), and toggles for randomization (PARAMS > randomize).

there are major differences between the "bloom" app and the "bloom" norns script. its difficult to obtain 100% the same sounds of the app so I did my best with my synthesis knowledge to create a similar sounds with SuperCollider. the sounds I have are a bell-like feedback sine sound which can be mixed with a kalimba sample (swapping between acoustic and synthetic) (PARAMS > blend). the drone notes are taken from the scale, as in the app, but the switching between drones is not precisely the same.

another change is the introduction of "lanes" (PARAMS > lanes). this essentially splits the grid into multiple lanes where each lane is a separate sequencer. by default there is one lane, but you can have one lane for each row on your grid.

The Great Hapax Experiment Vol. 1 - Squarp Hapax sequencing loads of stuff and Cocoquantus improvs

video upload by -CALC-

"Sat with this one quite a bit for quite a bit.... kept it unlisted for over a year but after some revisits thought maybe its time to put it out there. Still stand by what I initially thought, its a "Curate's egg... Good in parts". Squarp and Coco were still newish at the time of this jam so still finding the feels.

This is what I thought of it back then:

I got a new brain!

Here's a full 45 minute noodle with the incredible Squarp Hapax front and centre. To say this is the most powerful hardware sequencer I have ever got my hands on is a total understatement.

WARNING This pretty experimental jam is not for the faint hearted in certain sections. Focussing on Hapax and the CocoQuantus it gets noisy and out there but that's what I love these days.

It was improvised and live-sequenced over a couple of initially formed sequences.
There are good bits but also some really bad sections in the middle too. I considered cutting these out but that would be a hard edit and they eventually do settle down.
I'd say the worst bits are:
20:30 - 21:26 (shitty idea to try and record a kick bass line without tuning the kick!)
28:39 - 29:42 (combo of not realising that the 1010 Blue box was turned down and having a few moments of forgetting how the CocoQuantus worked... oh and a pesky Buchla sequence I forgot to stop!)

Hapax is firing off and controlling a ton of stuff in the room:
Circuit Rhythm
Ciat Lonbarde CocoQuantus (clocking the loopers)
Nord Drum 3p
Rossum Electro Assimil8or (through CV.OCD)
Meng Qi Wingie 2
Novation Summit - also acting as a controller keyboard for everything in the set-up
Buchla 208C
Norns (running Plonky Script for multisamples)
Just Friends in polysynth mode
Vongon Polyphrase
Vongon Ultrasheer
Mutable Instruments Beads
and some dodgy singing
All connected via Hapax's MIDI Outs and a Conductive Labs MRCC"

Sedimented

video upload by Luca Longobardi

"Impermanenza is the title of my new album (to be released in the first half of 2024). The album describes a precise way of writing music based on the unrepeatability of some details, on the discovery of new possibilities of one's setup, on experimentation based on practical intuition . A sort of 'method' that has matured and unconsciously settled during the last year of work. This song was conceived, written and recorded this way this morning. And exactly like the concept of the unexpected, I decided that it will be a bonus track of the album (but also the first single dropped without warning today only on my social channels).

On setup:
_ drone from OP-1 using the Hold sequencer;
_ Awake from Norns into Crow that manages Just Friends. Arpeggio created by setting the Time knob in order to rhythmically phase out the two melodic lines of Awake;
_ Dradd provides via granular synthesis to 'cover' the arpeggio making it a chord progression in the first and last part of the piece.

Enjoy!"
