Mutable Instruments Ambika soundscape - Mars awaits

video upload by MIDERA

"I have played many hybrid synthesizers. Prophet 12, 3rd wave, DW-8000, ESQ-1, Poly Evolver, Pro-2, maybe others? And I always come to this conclusion. The Ambika sticks out as my favorite. At least, in terms of sound. In terms of UI, P12 wins. In terms of build quality, Poly Evolver wins (minus the encoder issues). DW-8000 does indeed have the most interesting filter IMO. They're all fun, very different... but the Ambika just has the best envelopes, great filters, awesome modulation capacity - and I'm always left feeling like this is an amazing synthesizer.

Inverted echoes (a modular patch idea)

video upload by Electrum Modular

"The aim here – besides trying out the TSNM as an expressive keyboard – was to generate an inverted echo, so that a descending melody comes back as an ascending one, or vice versa. (I stole this idea from Bach, who often used contrapuntal inversion, playing the theme “upside-down”).

Mutable Instruments’ Beads (in delay mode) is perfect for this, but any module with a long delay would work. The other crucial ingredient is a multi-channel mixer/attenuverter such as Make Noise Maths (here, I’m using Acid Rain’s Junction).

Other modules used:
Intellijel’s Bifold
Intellijel’s Dixie II+
Intellijel’s Scales
Shakmat’s Banshee Reach

ALM’s MFX

Elmyra 2 // cLFO // Microcell // Cosmos // Poly 2

video upload by Lesjamusic

"Following Thursday’s fun playing the Elmyra directly, I wanted to try triggering a sequence. I’m using the Polyend Poly 2 to split the midi from Keystep over 4 CV/gate outputs - hence the spaghetti of wires dangling from the big case. Atovproject’s excellent cLFO is modulating various parameters on Elmyra, keeping the drone evolving. Microcell and Cosmos for texture.

Off screen, CXM 1978 and OTO Boum finish things.

PARTICLES - MUTABLE RINGS & NANO MODULES ONA - EURORACK AMBIENT SESSION

video upload by A Last Picture From Voyager

"Nano Module ONA and Mutable Rings go really well together. I took some time to explore these two modules in their basic characteristics, they are the last to be included in my configuration, and I hope to be able to exploit them in more depth in the future. Here, Mutable PLAITS adds a layer of drone to ONA, they evolve together in a semi-polyphony directed by the HERMOD sequencer. And Make Noise MATHS advances the sequence randomly, to create something alive."

Music For Clouds with Mutable Instruments Rings and Beads

video upload by Mega Modularis

"Hello There! This is a generative ambient piece I made recently, which is primarily Rings (Rangoon by Big T Music) fed into I think the Mimeophon before going into Beads, with some gentle modulation from my two beloved Ochds! Enjoy! I didn’t actually film the making of the patch or anything, but I had this nice mesmeric cloud footage, and I thought they went well together, I’ve always thought of Rings + Clouds (and/or Beads) as ‘Cloud Music’ What do you think? Let me know If i should share more stuff like this? Longer musical pieces without any commentary.

All the footage I shot myself on my Fuji X-E4 in my backyard!

Enjoy, MM."

u-he CVilization Mode I: Musical demo (no talking)

video upload by u-he

"Here's a jam featuring our CVilization module in Mode I (4 x 4 Matrix Mixer). We're exploring the musical possibilities of the mysterious Matrix Rotation [posted here]. 4 different oscillator signals are routed through CVilization's matrix and distributed to various other modules. CVilization now rotates its inputs and outputs, creating ever-changing mixes of these oscillator signals. CVilization's sidekick Wiretap also joins the game with two of its outputs hooked up, creating some funky alternating envelopes.

Bring back Rings! PlayFader Ambient Exploration

video upload by MATTHS

"Bring back rings! Yes, you know 'those ambient rings jams'! This is something new for me, moving away from my hard techno background, I wanted to explore the more ambient world once again. Armed with the Play All Day PlayFader (which is awesome) and has been so much fun to play with, I decided to build and dedicate a small case for more ambient noodles.

Here the PlayFader is sequencing everything.
MIDI is going to the Knobula Pianophonic while CV and Gate is going to Mutable Instrument Rings. Im playing with the Fun ability of the PlayFader to make more interesting loops within loops and there is lashing of reverb of course.

Enjoy!"

Nonlinearcircuits VCO Demo

video upload by Randy Piscione

"This is a demo of an older Nonlinearcircuits VCO, based on a Mikulic/Electronotes core with phase sync and pan-pulse circuitry from the Aries AR-338.

The video starts with a sequence, and scope shots of four of the five waveforms the VCO puts out. I didn’t bother with the triangle, but there is a pulse, then saw, then pan pulse and processed saw. These are eventually blended together, and then the left side VCO is faded in. This one is hard synced to another VCO. The equipment list is at the bottom of the description.

The PCB is not designed for Eurorack so I built a dual version to fit them behind a double panel. I originally built it in 2015, made a new panel in 2018, and it stopped working shortly after that. Each VCO required 50 hookups, so 100 wires, 200 solder joints. Ouch!

When it failed, for no apparent reason, I removed all of the point-to-point wiring, couldn’t figure out what happened, and put it aside for quite a few years. If only I had known then what I know now, the failure was a simple IC problem. I had purchased TL074s from eBay that turned out to be pirate versions. It would’ve been a one minute fix. I decided to tackle it again recently, and re-soldered all of the wires. Unfortunately, I used crap wire, so off those came, and I did it again! Still had some issues but with substantial help from John at PM Foundations, we were able to bring it back to life.

Sequence – Pamela’s Workout, Analogue Solutions Oberkorn, NLC VCO, PM Foundations 3080 VCO, Doepfer A-143-2 Quad ADSR, Bastl A B C (X2), Frequency Central Waverunner (X2), ALM Pip Slope, d:Machinery Red LFO, PM Foundations Mod+

Drums – PM Foundations ER-808 (TB-808 tribute)

String-ish thing – PM Foundations resemble (X4), Full Bucket FB-3300 VST, Full Bucket Modul Air VST

Morbus Legio | The filthy beauty of Engineered Noise.

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"It's always cool to try a new Noise Engineering firmware. But I had my doubts with this one, because it's just a Noise generator and it will not have a dedicated hardware module. It's a freebee. But that's not all, because Morbus means 'disease' in Latin, hopefully in the context of it being a 'sick' firmware.

My doubts were confirmed at first patch. It accepts external sounds, but only to wavefold them in three different levels of destruction. The noise itself has colored noise, covering the rainbow between black- and white noise, but it also allows you to reduce the sample rate, producing something we'd all want to avoid. Who'd want a module with a digital noisefloor of 0 dB?

But they call themselves Noise Engineering for a reason, and Morbus turned out to be an amazing asset to any Eurorack setup. If you love an occasional dark ambient heavy industrial tour, this module will be a lot of fun. However, you'll need to spend some time with it to find all the sweet spots, and try as many of external sources as you can. Wavefolders work best with simple waveforms, and will trash the more complex ones.

I couldn't help thinking of Mordor while patching it. And then, patching a Mutable Rings was just meant to be. Inevitable. Precious. We all love Rings into Clouds. But it belongs in Mordor."

Building a Buchla 248 MARF with Stages, Stages, Stages and Marbles

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"Sorry about that title. The MARF is short for the Multiple ARbitrary Function generator, a huge Buchla design carrying the model number 248, and is part of the 200 series. It's not easy to compare it with anything, but you could see it as a 16 step 0-CTRL, a Rossum Control Forge and maybe even the 250e circular Dual Arbitrary Function generator (DARF) like Frap Tools USTA. I contacted Todd Barton (thanks so much!) to be able to study a few MARF images. The sliders made me think of Mutable Stages, and the control section reminded me of Marbles. While getting lost on the way, I finally got a patch that sounded similar: 'music that sounds like dancing butterflies'.
The recipe involves variable timing, notes, a quantizer, and a transpose. You may also need a trigger or gate when a segment runs or finishes. There's a lot to explore here, and I don't think you can find a MARF in a single eurorack solution. I tried to approximate it, but I also needed Maths to do envelopes and gate extraction. It took a while to make this video and I wasn't sure about the results until the very end. Then suddenly, it worked.

You'll need a lot of stuff to do it, but there may be smaller solutions. I'll revisit this idea when my Control Forge arrives and I'll be able to combine USTA with the CF.

This is a complex video so I hope it will make a bit of sense. It would have been better to figure all this out and then make a video. But you'd be missing the fun of exploration. There are plenty of useful examples of how 'factory' Stages can be used, but I installed the Qiemem firmware for max flexibility. In the end I only used its 'random segment' feature in this video, but it doesn't play a role in the MARF patch. You can do this with factory Stages but it still requires a chain of 2 or 3. You can use any sequencer with a clock input for this. A DFAM will also help you to cover the time/level sequence.

Installation requires playing a .WAV into the module which can be bit of a drag. I recommend using a eurorack sample player like the BitBox for a high success ratio. Using a phone, PC or pad can be a nightmare. Also, I am not sure if the firmware works on a clone, please comment if you tried it.
https://github.com/qiemem/eurorack/re...

I am still trying to wrap my head around it. Even though Stages and Marbles are now discontinued, they're easy to find as fully functional clones. With Eurorack, we have the 'power' to build our own synths, or get inspired by designs which are still amazing and modern after +50 years. I hope it inspires you too."
