♫ Jamming With a Bunch of Synths ♫ ----- (79)

video upload by

"This jam is a little weird. My phone was on low battery which made the video slightly glitchy. I was a bit distracted during this recording so it's maybe a bit more boring than usual. There is also a couple mysterious audio drop outs near the end of the video. I didn't notice these prior to uploading so it's possible something went wrong when combining the audio and video files or something.

Sonic sculptures (generative modular music)

video upload by Electrum Modular

"(For Paula)

This patch was inspired by hours (weeks?) of listening to Morton Feldman’s exquisite music. It ended up quite different harmonically from Feldman’s pieces, partly due to the limitations of a modular system. The envelope generators and attenuators required some tweaking to get that balance between repetition and divergence, revolving and evolving. In retrospect, I could have left longer silences between notes.
NOTE: no delay effect used here, as it would have reintroduced a pulse.

“Almost all of Feldman’s music is slow and soft. Only at first sight is this a limitation. I see it rather as a narrow door, to whose dimensions one has to adapt oneself (as in Alice in Wonderland) before one can pass through it into a state of being that is expressed in Feldman’s music. Only when one has become accustomed to the dimness of the light can one begin to perceive the richness and variety which is the material of the music...Feldman sees sounds as reverberating endlessly, never getting lost, changing their resonances as they die away, or rather not die away, but recede from our ears, and soft because softness is compelling, because an insidious invasion of our senses is more effective than a frontal attack.”” -- Cornelius Cardew, quoted by John Tilbury in “On Playing Feldman”

"Delights of Kyoto" - Akai MPC + Roland SH4d + Roland OpSix + Arturia MiniFreak +

video upload by Patrick Manderson

"'Delights of Kyoto' was recorded live late Saturday afternoon on 3/2/2024 using a MIDI sequencer and a room full of synthesizers and audio gear. All automation was programmed into the Akai MPC X. Some manual tweaks on the Midas console was made during recording.

Inspired by YouTube videos of Japanese restaurants and diners - 'Kyoto' was developed using the Roland SH4d as a drum synthesizer, paired with my usual synthesized drum kit on the Korg Radias and some excellent Hydrasynth patches developed by @Jexus. Voice synthesis on the Arturia MINIFREAK and various pads, plucks, stabs and noises provided by the Sequential REV2, Roland JP-8080, Korg OpSix among others.

The most significant addition to this music is a careful degree of live mixing using the Midas Venice F24 running a stereo mix through the Warm Audio Bus Compressor.

Behringer Edge with the DB-01

video upload by Richard DeHove

"The Edge-DFAM class of machines is an odd category. Not a very good as a synth due to the constant (and necessary) manipulation of the oscillator frequencies. Not particularly good as a drum machine due to the 8-step limitations and the delicate juggling required to squeeze out multiple sounds. And not so great live since there are no presets and too many parameters to easily morph to a different sound. OTOH if you want a random percussion chaos layer then it's the perfect solution.

Of course they're great fun to twiddle and make unexpected discoveries. They also pair up pretty well with more conventional machines to produce a more complex result than you'd get with 'ordinary' synths.

Having owned both the DFAM and Edge I'm happy but hesitant to admit that in a 1:1 matchup I'd choose the Edge. This is entirely due to the MIDI clock options: The sequence must always start at the start - duh. Some people say the DFAM sounds better (whatever that means) but I'm not feeling anything radically different. My only complaint is that the LPF feels murky and doesn't interact with the resonance control in a pleasing way. The HPF is much superior imo and saves the filter section. Of course it may be that I've now been trained by prolonged Polivoks filter exposure to expect satisfying grit and tortured screaming.

Back on the topic of 'Would I use it live', the more I thought about that the more I thought I'd use the LXR-02 instead. Perhaps a video 'The LXR-02 does the DFAM' would be good?

It may also be of interest to note the use of the DB-01 gate output connected to the noise level in Demo 1. It generates some noise percussion when playing normally because of the gate length but this largely disappears when playing the arpeggiator's much shorter gate length.

As usual there are absolutely no external effects or DAW processing.

Behringer Cat Retro & Modern Patches: Bass, Lead. No Talk Demo

video upload by Anton Anru

"Welcome to the soundset for the Behringer Cat synthesizer.
«Analog Classics» is a collection of 60 patches: 18 Leads, 16 Basses, 16 Plucks, 5 Chords, 5 FX.
It includes famous sounds that are found in many electronic tracks, from vintage to modern, musical solo timbres; retro basses that will fit into any track or performance. The patches will add uniqueness to your music, featuring the characteristic sound introduced by the Behringer Cat.

📦 Get the soundset: https://antonanru.sellfy.store/p/cat-...

Plucks are excellent for use with arpeggiators or sequencers. In most examples of this category, I utilize an arpeggiator. Behringer Cat doesn’t have a built in arp/seq, but you may integrate your preferred arpeggiators or sequencers from your DAW or MIDI controller.

Chords are patches that involve intervals between the oscillators, such as major/minor thirds and others, creating the illusion of a chord.

The presets are suitable for a variety of genres, including: ambient, electronica, IDM, deep, techno, house, progressive, trance, lounge, downtempo, funk, jazz, pop, chill out, new age, cinematic, breaks, jungle, drum and bass, dub and others.

The soundset is presented in the form of PDF-Document. Each page contains notes that explain how the patch works, what parameters are worth tweaking during playback, and how to develop the timbre during a performance.

There are audio examples of all patches inside the folder with the soundset.

Tunegirl - live at SUPERBOOTH23

video upload by Superbooth Berlin

"Tunegirl's musical journey began in the 70s as a devoted fan of Hard Rock icons like Status Quo and AC/DC. Starting as a guitarist in a school band, she rocked out to her idols' tunes, playing by ear and gaining local recognition.

In the 80s, funk and soul captivated her, leading her to explore DJing in local discos and immersing herself in the grooves of the era. It was during this time that she first encountered synthesizers, drawn in by the sounds of Depeche Mode and Human League.

The 90s brought a love for techno, inspired by artists like Jeff Mills and Richie Hawtin. Despite dabbling in software production, she longed for the tactile experience of hardware instruments.

Rediscovering her passion in 2009, she embraced software production but missed the spontaneity of jam sessions. Returning to hardware, she explored Elektrons, Volcas, and Roland Airas, yet still felt something was missing.

A turning point came when she discovered modular synthesis through a YouTube video. Intrigued, she embarked on a journey of discovery, diving into Eurorack with determination.

Despite the challenges, her dedication paid off, and she found her ideal instrument in the Eurorack system, unlocking a newfound freedom of expression and creativity. Tunegirl's journey is a testament to the transformative power of music and the endless possibilities of artistic exploration.

Behringer Edge & Crave Combo Patches + Samples. No Talk Demo

video upload by Anton Anru

"Welcome to the soundset for the semi-modular synthesizers Behringer EDGE + CRAVE. It is a collection of 50 presets (+50 CRAVE patterns) that include basses, drums/percussion, leads, plucks, textures, FXs.
There is a wide range of sound colors inside the pack: massive and gentle, aggressive and soft, bright and dull, melodic and inharmonic tones, straight and polymetric patterns.

📚 Get the soundset: https://antonanru.sellfy.store/p/behr...

The main point of the soundset is the high level of interconnection, not just syncing the two synths with independent timbres (individual patches for EDGE and CRAVE are also available on my website).
In this patchbook, the timbres of the synths are soldered and can’t exist separately:
🔸 they modulate each other with LFO and Envelopes
🔸 a sequence from one synth change parameters on the other one
🔸 gates and triggers interaction breaks predictable patterns
🔸 audio signals from OSCs may be used as modulation sources to create harmonies/intervals or crazy experimental inharmonic tones
🔸 or they may be used just as audio sources that go to the other synth to be processed with its (different) filter and envelope and get the «second life».

At the same time, they play different and distinct roles; it’s not a sonic mess, but two synths working in close cooperation.

📝 Each page contains notes explaining how the patch works, which parameters are worth tweaking during playback, and how to develop the timbre during a performance. By making these settings consciously and trying the things mentioned in the notes, you will learn a lot about the synths and discover their true depth.

To recreate these patches, you will need up to 12 patch cords.
There are audio examples of all patches inside the folder with the soundset.

💽 Each patch has audio examples presented in three variants: EDGE only, CRAVE only, and both together.
💽 Additionally, there's a separate folder containing WAV samples with the same timbres, along with Scale and BPM information. These samples can be used inside a sampler or DAW to achieve the exact sound heard in the examples. Feel free to slice them for one-shots or loops; they serve as excellent material for further editing and processing.

I added delays/reverbs and pads to create a musical context.
They are not included in the soundset."

UBXa vs OBX8 // 2 modern takes on the OBXa

video upload by Starsky Carr

Note the OB-X8 actually has all three OB's, the OB-X, OB-Xa, and OB-8. So three in one that can be mixed and matched. See https://oberheim.com for more info.

"Behringer vs Oberheim - if you're looking for a modern recreation of the OBxa the cost difference between these 2 synths is quite something... but what about the sound? Functionally UBXa and OBX8 have different options. The Behringer has a Mod Matrix and sequencer, but the Oberheim has an OBX and cross mod for example.

But here, I'm concentrating on the raw OBXa sound emulation. ... and FYI:

Cambridge Dictionary meaning of emulation in English
'the process of copying something achieved by someone else and trying to do it as well as they have'

so yes I've called them emulations :)
