Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. After redirecting the money for a nice 2018 weekend trip, spending a couple of years in my own private Elektron bootcamp and embracing the “limitations breed creativity” Zen I have become quite an avid Digitakt user.

However, today we are going to talk about the Boss DR-5. This 1994 drum machine looks suspiciously similar to the Swedish mono samplers so after rumors of Digitakts discontinuation started swirling a while back I might as well take a look at this cheapskate alternative.

"Jamsession with an Elektron Digitakt and a Roland CR-8000 mixed together in an analog Ibanez RM-60 Mixer.
There is also reverb from a Lexicon PCM 90 (yellow FX knob on the mixer).
Furthermore I use the monitoring send as feedback line (blue FX knob on the mixer).
With mastering.

The Ibanez RM-60 is similar in design to the Boss KM-60. The Boss has more drive in the preamp and the HiPass filter in the master section can be used better in a performance.
The Ibanez Mixer on the other side has less ground noise and a monitor send.
I like both of them. Good usable for a jamsession.

"For this piece, named "Cooldown", I brought out my UDO Super 6 and paired it up with my Boss Reverb RV-6 for some reverb. Everything then goes through the Elektron Syntakt, which in turn sens everything to the Elektron Analog Heat +FX. What you hear is recorded directly from the Analog Heat +FX without any post-processing applied."

"Drowning the lead synth - which imperturbably repeats it's themes - in the dark and endless reverb of a Roland #DEP5. Other guests beside the DIY gear: FB01 through Dynacord #VRS23, Moog #Matriarch, Boss SX700 which got modulated by fader on the phaser mid frequency while processing the Wersi CX-1 HiHats. A Volca Sample also contributes a bit of background beat."

"The first episode in a new series which will explore different pedal and routing combinations with the LXR-02 drum machine. First up are two Roger That pedals from Fairfield Circuitry (for left-right stereo), a Boss GEB-7 EQ and the Future Factory stereo delay from Free the Tone. Some might recognise the pedal setup from my last video with the DB-01. I liked the stereo effect so much it seemed a shame not to swap out the DB-01 for the LXR-02 and give it a test.
