Synths + Pedals: Vintage Boss DSD-3 & RV-3 as delay/Reverb w/ analogue MiniMod Eurorack synth

video upload by DreamsOfWires

"Trying out 2 80’s/90’s Boss guitar pedals on simple synth notes using the 3-VCO MiniMod voice from AJH Synth for some fat Minimoog sound. This video was mainly to hear what the delay of the DSD-3 sounds like, but I thought I’d add the RV-3 on the end of the signal for some reverb too, to keep it all-guitar pedal. No post-processing, just the raw output of the pedals.
The 1987 Boss DSD-3 is apparently internally identical to the 1985 DSD-2, and shares the ‘long chip’ of the rack-mount SDE-3000. Here I’m just using it as a delay effect, but I’ll experiment with the sampling function in a future video. Excuse the typo in the on-screen titles - this was an 80's pedal, not 90's.
The 1994 Boss RV-3 however is quite a lot different from the 1987 RV-2 - a later and more advanced processor, so it’s bound to sound a little more modern, although it does seem to have that vintage digital metallic quality to the reverb tails sometimes, at least to my failing ears.
You buy these pedals for their character, not their realism, but for me they’re also pedals I wanted when I was a broke teenage guitarist back in the day, so there’s nostalgia and curiosity in them too.
The Synth: The MiniMod is a Eurorack modular synth system, accurately based on the vintage circuitry of the original R.A. Moog Minimoog. It has that huge, rich, warm sound, but with the open architecture/flexibility that modular offers.

"I colored outside the lines a bit on this one. Clipping, messy.
Some weird acid vibes but mostly just weird.
I got this old Boss mixer with banana jacks for $5. Still figuring out gain staging, lol. Interesting flaws, but I think it works well for this kind of thing."

Vintage Synthesizer Books

You can find these and more listed for sale on Reverb here.

Pictured:

1. The Musician and the Micro (1982)
The Musician and the Micro (1982)
by Ray Hammond

From the back sleeve:

• “The hit record charts are now dominated by computer-aided instruments. Using many pop star examples, exclusive interviews and photographs, this fascinating book explains in a highly readable manner, the exciting world of microprocessor and computerised musical instruments.

• The development of computer-aided musical instruments has been rapid and ignorance caused apprehension among many young musicians. Also, many teachers and members of the music industry are wary of the implications resulting from the availability of inexpensive computer aids.

• To remedy this situation, the book sets out in a a simple language, the development of the instruments, analyses their performance and delights in the benefits which may be derived. It then discusses an exciting and wide range of products now available.

• Reading the book, even a non-musician will understand the interplay of music and the new musical technology - the instruments, their practical use, the alternative types available and the truly amazing future prospects for computer-aided instruments.

• As a bonus, an important chapter deals with computer-aided learning tools. Teachers are just beginning to discover that such instruments encourage learning, expand student’s horizons and make excellent “patient” tutors. Another equally important chapter also concerns the adaptation of home computers into music-making instruments.”

• NOTE! These books are new and unused, from old stock, but 40 years of shelf life has left some rash on their covers.

• Paperback, 192 pages - With lots of nostalgic illustrations.
ISBN 0-7137-1299-6

2. Synthesis (1976 - 1st printing) by Herbert Deutsch
Synthesis (1976) - First printing
An introduction to the History, Theory & Practice of Electronic Music

A historical publication, from the man who stood at the cradle of the Moog synthesizer: Herbert A. Deutsch.

Including 7” 33rpm vinyl: “Tape Study” (Deutsch while performing a number of audio experiments and manipulations).

Library binding* - 120 pages
ISBN 0-58284-043-6

NEW FROM OLD STOCK
* Initially a softcover edition, but hardbound in preparation for a synth-library-to-be, a library that never became a reality. Now it is time for them all to make place for other activities. Keep an eye on this shop, because a lot more of them will appear.
3. DAS SYNTHESIZER HANDBUCH - Bernd Schreiber
SYNTHESIZER TRANSPARANT GEMACHT
by Bernd Schreiber - 1980

Rare German publication from the early days of commercially available synthesizers, with explanations based on the use of the Korg MS- and PS series. Since the theory of all analogue synths is similar, this book can be used to understand and program many other synths from that era. If you speak German of course.

Originally a paperback, I actually damaged it a bit (folding back a corner while inserting it into a bookcase, which is still visible. Reason enough to have it bound into a hard cover to avoid further damage. Afterward i had this done with many synth books, to be part of a synthesizer library and guarantee them a long life. A library that never became a reality. Time to clean out the bookcase. The contents are still as new and in excellent condition.

10 Distortion Techniques: Every Synth Needs This

video upload by Anthony Marinelli Music

"Get ready for some sonic devastation as I demonstrate some of my favorite efx pedals and techniques that deliver filthy synth sounds capable of cutting through even the thickest wall of amplified guitars! I'll show you 10 different color palates with hands-on examples ranging from tasteful overdrive, distortion, fuzz all the way to full meltdown clipping. A little of these flavors added to your synthesizer instrument will help you create more inspiring sounds and also help you require less work to bring you final mixes together. I truly believe that every synth needs a drive circuit as much as it needs filters, reverbs and delays. After watching this video I hope you'll be inspired to grab some analog distortion pedals and start discovering what I did, that I can't live without them."

Solina String effects demo: Filters, phasers, drives and dirt

video upload by Richard DeHove

"The Solina's raw sound is not like your standard synth so it tends to react differently to effects. I tried lots of different effects and picked the most interesting to show here. First up was the Erica Synth AcidBox III which, surprisingly, was an excellent match. Using the AcidBox with full resonance was fun and would sound even better with stereo delay but I wanted to keep things to just one effect at a time here. Perhaps the AcidBox works so well because of the lack of controls on the Solina - suddenly the Solina gets an LFO, filter, resonance, input drive and envelope follower.

The phaser test with the EHX SmallStone, Phaser 95 and PH-1r I also found very interesting. For me the Ph-1r had the richest sound and the SmallStone was identical to the onboard phaser.

In the drive, disortion and dirt department the Glove and B3K had their moments while the Geiger Counter ranged from mild to total destruction and some bit crushing at the end.

I also included a short demo with the Boss Slicer, but that thing requires several hours discussion just by itself. Where I'm playing a chord with one note I'm actually triggering a Cthulu chord player in the DAW. Most chords are taken from a custom import of the main string line from Bruckner's 7th.

707 (Korg 707)

video upload by WilliamSalmela

"Here’s a song I made with the Korg 707 from 1987. The Korg 707 is a digital FM synthesizer with 8 voices of polyphony.

”707” by The William Salmela Project

No other sound sources were used. The Korg 707 doesn’t have any built in effects, so the sound was further processed with the following equipment:
Boss CE-300 Super Chorus
EHX Small Stone phaser
Korg SDD-1200 (used this heavily for chorusing the sounds)
Roland SDE-2000 delay
TC-Electronic Powercore reverbs"

Boss DM-101: First Jam with synths - Oberheim OB-X8 and Roland JP-8000

video upload by thesrabbit

"I got the DM-101 yesterday and immediately fell in love with the character and stereo modes in particular. I decided to make a quick jam that features my favorite mode so far, the stereo "pattern" mode. This mode has some nice stereo width and interesting tempo sync'd delay repeats. Since the repeats are a bit on the long side, for a BBD, there's plenty of lo-fi goodness, which almost sounds like a bit crusher.

I ran both the JP-8000 and OB-X8 into a mixer, and then FX sends from the mixer to the DM-101. I had no problems sending the mixer line-level signal to the 101. I thought I might have to use a re-amp box to bring the the level down, but I didn't have to, which is great.

I was lazy and recorded straight into Mainstage, which is not great because I couldn't mix the dry synth track and FX track after. Sometimes the balance is good, other times not so much. Oh well, it was a quick live jam so whatever. I just wanted to record something with this particular delay setting, which I have since saved as a preset of course.

Sorry the videography is so boring. My room is a total mess and I don't have anywhere good to position the camera right now.

All of the OB-X8 patches will be included in my upcoming soundset. Release date TBD."
