This goldmine in via swissdoc. Title link takes you to a load of old MOOG albums for download. The site includes minor details for each album including an image, the artist, number of tracks, etc. But most importantly each one contains sample and full download links.
This is amazing.....but I can't see how it is at all legal or benefitting the artists. there is no information about location, artists rights, publishing etc.

It reminds of when i found that site of current top ten Mp3s - Albums for a dollar - only to realize it was run out of Russia and was (possilby) involved with all that credit card scamming.
Hope it is all legit, cuz this is cool.

It brings the idea of rummage sale "great finds" into a head swimming pile. Like you'd be super happy if you found one of these random records in the cardboard box between the Lawrence Welk and Conway Twitty overstocks every rummage sale has.

Well it looks like they take the recording at high quality seriously... but it doesn't justify charging for it. If they are not trying to steer the dollars in the right direction (the artists or their estates) then they shouldn't be making money from this. There are many fantastic blogs out there that are doing the same thing and offering this stuff for free. Granted, I almost shat myself when I saw some of the titles... but charging for it and no comments about doing this the Right way? hmm...that's not on for me.
ReplyDeletewell, i'm sure they'll try to justify it by saying it pays for the gear used to record everything. I don't agree with that... at all. I admire people that share hard to find, out of print records but making a buck from it? assholes.
ReplyDeletei'm in the music licensing industry and most people I deal with in the biz are happy for out of print stuff to be distributed free on the net these days... even most of the artists I meet. but charging.....!
Here's a great chance to set up some sort of new model. these guys could hold onto the cash and help these records be legit rereleased .. but nothing.. no comments on where it goes.. no matter how nominal these fees are they are just wrong.
Seriously Matrix, I know you only link to this stuff as "Archival", but isn't this one just a little too dirty to be driving traffic to? I love a Dick Hymen record cover as much as the next guy (I actually have both of them that they're selling on this site, and love them) but I don't think these guys (or gals to be fair) should be profiting from this. Just MHO.
ReplyDeleteI can't really answer that as there are too many assumptions flying about this one.
ReplyDeleteHere are some things to consider:
1. Each recording either is or isn't out of print and in the public domain.
2. The people that put these up either did or didn't do a lot of work on these. Check out the home page for what they claim to have done. I have no clue if they did or didn't and I'm not going to assume either way.
3. If it is not legit, I'm sure someone will find out about it and they will have to take it or the recordings that are not legit down. Hey maybe I'm a hero by bringing this to people's attention.
4. These recordings may have not been available prior to this.
5. These recordings could have been lost forever.
6. People out there might want them and if they are legit then so be it.
As for the artists, yeah it does suck if nothing goes to them, but (another assumption) it's my understanding that record companies and some individuals own the music, and in many cases not the artists. I have no idea who legally owns these recordings, but if I had to guess they were the property of a record company at some point and may now be in the public domain.
Doesn't Michael Jackson still own the rights to the Beatles? All that money goes to him not the artist.
1. It's also a fallacy to think any music from the 60s and 70s is in the public domain. Now it's true that some artists who never got paid in the first place and possibly lost the rights to their music don't really care or actually do want to see their music out there for free but it is kind of low to see the promotion of paid downloads of someone pimping their record collection.
ReplyDelete3. It probably is a good thing to bring it to people's attention, but it's pretty clear what's going on and not very informative (both the post and the site to diferent degrees)
4. Well there certainly was a legit Dick Hyman Moog CD out on Varese Sarabande. It's not in print at the moment but so much for the "not available prior to this".
5. Come on, "lost forever" could very well be an original master recording or test pressing if unbacked up but isn't going to be a properly released 1960s album in our lifetime. Most of these albums can be picked up at any decent record show and this site likely funds that habit.

It blows my mind artists want to get paid with one hand and think it is ok to steal with the other.

all i know is that hen i download free music i end up buying what i like. my record buying has dropped off greatly since napster was screwed up. there are good bands that host thier own catalogs i think it's a great option if the band was alway indie.

I've purchased from Basic Hip....he does an excellent job of transferring the content. As for artists not getting paid, the albums are out of print and they are not getting paid anyway.
ReplyDeleteI presume that many would rather this music be lost forever than have someone make a few bucks doing the transfers. That does no one any good...especially the artists.
