ReplyDeleteFar be it for me to judge her...I own plenty of pieces of gear that I really don't *need* to have (or use very often), but I want. She and I are definitely working with vastly different budgets, but hey...so what?
ReplyDeleteIf she likes to collect synths, why does everyone make such a big deal about it? Yes, I know some of you will say "Well, she doesn't make music", which isn't entirely true, and even if it were, is it so bad that she likes to tinker with synths and has the means to buy whatever she wants? I don't think so.
I have a feeling Cikira writes a lot more music than people realize, but even if she hasn't written one note, WHO CARES? is there some sort of 'Measures of music per piece of gear owned' quota we're all suposed to meet? Something tells me all the negative comments are brought on by envy. Sad.

Some of the anon comments make me ask "if a sour grape fell in the woods,
ReplyDeleteyada yada yada", but anyway there IS at least one mixer in those shots but perhaps they are unrecognizable to some if it doesn't say Mackie or some such on it. And I'm stumped as to what the reference to the lack of cables on some items is supposed to mean. You can only play so many things at once you know.
It really doesn't matter what this lady does with her synths or studio.

While I agree that she can purchase whatever she like with her money, I also find it quite amusing that most of the stuff is not even plugged in or hooked up. Maybe the trolls have a point.

Most of the good stuff looks plugged in to me. Anyway, with that amount of equipment, it would be impractical to keep it all plugged in. If you want to use one piece of gear with another that's across the room, it's easier to just pick it up and move it rather than come up with an elaborate patchbay architecture.
I don't understand the haters at all.
Actually, if you look on her website she details how everything is routed. Its plugged in and all good to go, its just done in a very clean fashion.
ReplyDeleteOk I will be the first to admit that I am quite envious of her synth arsenal and, even more, the real estate of which she is able to have all the synths accessible(I am limited to my studio apartment) ... for a time I use to get synths just because it was a new synth but at some point you realize that is not why you started buying synths in the first place...from my perspective I started accumulating synths to create new sounds, find new sources of synthesis...but with her display it looks like furniture or jewels, not a source of creativity or inspiration, just a gross display of consumerism... don't get me wrong I admire and drool at being surrounded by all those synths but it just seems to be a wasted opportunity ...I wish she would give us a little bit more in the way of sonic experimentation ... for example routing a synth through another synth's filter/envelopes (ob12 to code/sherman) or using the Pulse stack as a drum synth, etc.

ReplyDeleteI think it is easy to diss this set-up... however, you don't always have to have everything plugged in to prove you make music. I doubt anyone who doesn't make any music would have all of these.

I think the "where's the music?" brigade are generally displaying a distasteful mix of envy, inverse snobbery, and straightforward sexism: "How dare a mere woman have the means to afford all of that gear and then refuse to prove to the rest of us that she deserves it?" (Idiots.)

ReplyDeleteI don't know this lady and I don't know if she makes music... but that is overkill and people who just collect and don't use are kind of strange. I'm not saying that's her deal, but it is sad when people have and don't use IMHO. However, people who own synths generally use them in some way. IMHO, if she just sits at them once in awhile and makes some space noises...she's ok with me.
ReplyDeletethe hatred we are seeing here, as usual, is coming from jealous losers. here are the facts. she has the money, or "skills" to acquire all this gear. you dont. if you got up off your lazy, bitter, talentless asses and tried to make some music that didnt suck and actually succeeded, then maybe youd have the cash to spend on the gear you lust after. and if you fail miserably, then youre obviously no more worthy of owning gear than cikira or anyone else with a collection that doesnt appear to be making music. so put out or shut up. you haters need to get some serious manners... and a clue.
ReplyDeletenow, all this aside, i do think the cikira phenomenon is sad. cause the whole thing is about her being female and having lots of synths. what shes doing is forcing the feminists of the world back a few steps. cause shes not getting attention based on her music or her synths, its on photos of a female in front of a bunch of synths. if she was making great music with them, it would be a whole other story. so, cikira, how about posting some great music youre making to shut people up and score a few girl power points? these days all you gotta do is hold down a chord and let the arpeggiator do the rest...
Do the cables run under the floor? That would be a good solution to manage so many synths.

On one hand you have some folks with mountains of gear (Cikira included) who have little to no demonstrable public output from that gear, and on the other you have people who have a controller keyboard and a laptop who produce tons of musical output. Most of us are comfortably somewhere in between.
ReplyDeleteEnvy rears its ugly head when we see people who have every piece of gear one could dream of. Me, I'm not envious of Amanda's gear pile. I would walk into that mess (if it were mine) and constantly wonder "where to begin?" I can't imagine ever getting anything done with all of that around me.
Never mind having to learn the ins and outs of everything. I have a hard enough time as it is with 2-3 bits of gear and the stuff that's on the computer...
No offense Gwenhwyfaer, but your comment about sexism is pretty retarded. It has nothing to do with sex. If you are at all familiar with this blog, you will know that anyone who posts a pic with a ton of gear always get the same "where's the music" comment and most times it is a mans setup, so please take that kind of "every man is a sexist" attitude elswhere.

ReplyDeleteYou haters are obviously just jealous of her success. Here is a tip: work hard and save/invest your own money and you too can have nice things one day. I love how everyone on this blog gets so jealous whenever they see someone with more or better (or both) gear than them.
She can use all the gear she owns, she just doesn't like to make her output public and get flack from trolls. What difference does it make? I saw her earlier studio and almost all of the main pieces went into a patchbay or mixer. Some people do art for themselves while others do it for the public--she enjoys the programming aspects too so does she need permission or qualification to have her setup? She has also done some collaborative projects.
ReplyDeleteShe has niche gear and keeps her programming in OS 9 which has it's purpose, the Opcode software is very functional and she has editors/librarians for most pieces, and can manage it all.
