The repeat concept looks good.
ReplyDeleteI'm so looking forward to Saturday, what about sound demos will those be included?
They kind of grow on you after looking at them for a few days now.
ReplyDeleteYou going to post any "gut" shots of these?
ReplyDeleteWow, a new parking spot, I was still on the other post. :)
ReplyDeleteSound- The most important part of the whole system. The MP3's will follow a few days later. I have this thing torn apart. Actually, That's why I'll be out of town Saturday. Some break, huh?
George Mattson
Are we ever going to see real pictures?
ReplyDeleteDude, click on the photo. Those are REAL pictures.
ReplyDeleteEhhh, thats kind of barebones. Where are the inputs for the CV to affect the levels of the various stages? Just how much are these things going to cost?
ReplyDeleteWhat is with the people saying that these are not real pictures. They are real pictures of the actual assembled modules. George already explained that. Maybe people should read all of the posts first before they comment.
ReplyDelete"Just how much are these things going to cost?"
ReplyDelete*Sigh*...
Like I said maybe people should read the other comments before they comment. George has said countless times now that he will reveal that as well as the full system info on Saturday. Patience is a virtue. ;)
I checked out the Syntar posts on Matrix and then checked out Carbon 111's info on the Syntar and Swan.
ReplyDeleteYou've been around the block I'd say.
Unfortunately I've never heard either synth so the MP3's will be crucial in my opinion. Looking forward to hearing them.
Do take a break!
"Ehhh, thats kind of barebones. Where are the inputs for the CV to affect the levels of the various stages? Just how much are these things going to cost?"
ReplyDeleteHave you even READ any of the comments? Price and functionality have already been questioned and answered.
Maybe just wait to ask your questions after this weekend.
Looking at those pictures, and thinking just how much I'm going to reduce my knob size (fnar). A knob big enough to hold but small enough not to hide the dial. And cheap. So, I'm thinking, toothpaste tube caps. If I brush my teeth 20 times between each mouthful of food, it should only take 10 years to accumulate enough caps for a full synth.
ReplyDelete"Have you even READ any of the comments? Price and functionality have already been questioned and answered. "
ReplyDeleteHi, thanks for answering my figurative question.
there are already "knobs" on the shafts
ReplyDeletethey work fine in my short time with the proto
like george says - you can put whatever you want on there if you dont like em
Repeat Level? what's that for?
ReplyDeletethe repeat function looks awesome!
ReplyDelete"Repeat Level? what's that for?"
ReplyDeleteMaybe similar to the MOTM looping adsr?
I'm posting anonymously 'cause it's been so, like, vitriolic on here. What's up with this normally civil blog, people? Someone does all this work, some imagination and spirit, and all we get is criticism, nagging, and internal squabbling. Weird. Thanks, George.
ReplyDeleteOops, when I said "thanks, George" in my last post, I didn't mean it to be a snide comment, as in "thanks for stirring the pot," but as in "thanks for your work." See, it even got to me!
ReplyDeleteNo good deed goes unpunished. Hang in there, George it must be a shitload of work getting these to market! Sleeping much? ;)
ReplyDeleteYeah,
ReplyDeleteI'm ignoring stuff I've already answered. It takes too long to type it out again. Thanks for the support.
But, remember that some people are just coming on board. They don't know about the other posts. Just help them out if you wish. Certainly don't bash them.
Sleep? I don't have a problem sleeping. It's waking up that's hard to do :)
However, Not that it matters. But, last April 4th is when the whole concept started. I had all of the circuit and board designs done, designed the box and had a fully-functioning prototype working on August 4th. That's like running a 2-minute mile. I have been working on this 16hrs/7 the whole time. I finally have some friends taking on part of the workload. So, I have some relief. They're actually telling me that I make a good secretary because I'm not hovering where they are :)
Oh well, I have to get the Sample & Hold ready for Matrix.
George Mattson
yeah weird. people suckin yamahas dcik for the overpriced lite brite and when someone comes along with something honest, well thought out, usable and affordable he gets slammed before he even gets to show it off. lay off the haterade.
ReplyDeleteSince when does 'Cheap' mean 'Very Over Priced'? As mentioned before a Doepfer system is similar cost with no sacrifices?
ReplyDeleteOff topic.. forgive me... But can someone please post a list of vendors for midi and analog sequencers? I'm looking for one with sliders instead of knobs. thanks!
ReplyDeleteYou haven't seen anything yet. Care to tell me what you based your decision on?
ReplyDeleteGeorge Mattson
Excuse me but I’d have to agree with the cost issue. The only thing you have not revealed are possible small additions to remaining modules. So this is beginning to look like a poorly executed concept. I understand the original intention but to charge $1500 + for such a simple “no extra’s” system is unreasonable. Especially since the modules you have shown so far couldn’t have possibly cost more then $20 to make.
ReplyDeleteSome people have already made up their minds regardless of knowledge, and the fact that someone thinks these modules have any "sacrifices" just accentuates this fact. Don't pre-judge, its easy and quick, but also ignorant and casts the judge in a very bad light.
ReplyDeleteInstead of a friendly give-and-take conversation, some would rather throw stones to see what kind of reaction they can get.
George is being completely candid and respectful with you folks perhaps you could be so polite as to return the favor.
George, your candor and honesty in your posts has been exemplary and rather brave. I really respect that! Shame its not more common.
Hey, the $20 guy is back!
ReplyDeleteWhat I see so far is the makings of a low-priced system, well designed and carefully thought through, with many more interesting details to be revealed within a few days.
ReplyDeleteWhy is it that I see so many negative comments and outright stupid questions based on stupid presumptions?
Yeah I know. That's a stupid question.
Do yourself a favor George. Ignore them. You can use your time much better at this moment. Don't feel like you have to keep track of this to defend your product. There are always enough nitpickers waiting in line to keep you busy all day. Enough to keep you away from building modules untill way after the planned shipping date. Wait till you hear their comments then....
And to the $20 guy....
ReplyDeleteI herewith order 500 of your modules. I am prepared to pay $39.95 for each of them.
For an expert manufacturer like you that must be "easy money". When can you ship?
No worries, I don't think that George really cares about what a couple lonely internet trolls that live in their mommies basement have to say. I bet that a lot of the trollish comments are from the same couple people with no life so they have to bash everyone else on the interenet to validate their own sad existance.
ReplyDeleteI say Kudos to George for coming up with this idea. It sounds like a great idea and I'm sure it will work out (and sell) very well.
he did say "$20 to make" and for most places %50 to %100 markup is very good. so even a $50.00 module should be more then possible.
ReplyDeletethat is, if that statement is actually true. is it?
I'm with senso. Mr. $20 is an idiot with no idea about manufacturing, even on a very small scale. Mr. $20, I will also buy your $20 modules since you are such a great synth maker, oh wait.. your not. Your some kid on the internet with no clue. My bad.
ReplyDeleteHaha, Mr. $20 is even admitting that he is trolling and nothing more. Playing "devils advocate" is just the PC way of saying trolling. ;)
ReplyDelete"In common parlance, a devil's advocate is someone who takes a position for the sake of argument. This practice is generally an instructional technique in which one person argues a position that another is less familiar with, thereby teaching proper argument."
ReplyDeletemoron
The $20 guy made a good point but attacked needlessly at the same time. The fact remains - both Doepfer and Analogue Systems sell a system that have more controls and CV inputs than these modules are showing so far for about $1500. Since this system is geared towards beginning modular users, it has to beat the others at price point. The basic MMM system should be priced no more than $1295 to compete. There are hundreds of potential modular users who feel priced out even at over $1000.
ReplyDeletePS, not you rewire, the anonymous troll.
ReplyDeleteFor those concerned about knob size being too small then let me remind you that you are a big knob.
ReplyDeleteMadison *MINI* Modular
I am getting this pause sensation on the Release part of the EG. Whos got the champeign ready for this Sat?
I think that some of the people making comments need to stop and take a deep breath and ask yourself if this is how you would act in real life without the anonymous veil of the internet. Let all have some respect and a little class, eh?
ReplyDeleteI'll answer them anyway. Thanks guys,
ReplyDeleteLike I said. I've done this a long time. I also said I'd blurt out the price before the rest of the story is out. That was my risk and goes to show that it was a risk to tell, and it was a risk to not tell. So, we crossed that barrier. Despite the fact that nobody has a clue about the rest of this. Makes it kind of pointless to compare something you know about with something you only partly know about.
That's not apples and apples. just venting opinion. It's their opinion to give and they have a right to do so.
It's up to the synth lover community to make their own determination on what is "right" for them. That's why there are a million manufacturers of toothpaste. Everybody has their own twist.(lets get their caps:) )
I know that I won't be able to please everybody and most of the people who make derogatory comments are either jealous, conciously trying to bring it down for some reason or just plain ignorant of what it takes to do this. And, jeeze guys, I don't want everybody to want it. The last thing I need is 1000 orders in 2 days. I'll tell you right now, I won't be able to fill them in time.
I'm too old to get into pissing matches. As I said, I don't have that 24 YO fire I had in my Syntar days.
I'll answer honestly and frankly to any honest question. I'm here to do that. This system warrants this kind of interaction.
And, As I said in another post, this is what I have to offer, and this is how I figured out how to do it to be fair all the way around. I also said that if the synth community decides they don't want this, it's no big deal, I can drop it and go about my business. 3 of us will have some pretty exclusive systems, though. And, one more toy for my studio. It would also make me lose my bet with my wife :)
So, take it or leave it. I will be building these in my shop, they'll be hand-crafted. I may even use two hands.
So, no big deal, that's why I'm here.
George Mattson
"Repeat Level"
ReplyDelete"Maybe similar to the MOTM looping adsr?"
Hey, its 'Phoenix Series' .. maybe like the 1978 Syntar? ;-)
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDelete"Hey, the $20 guy is back!"
ReplyDeletemeh .. different guy.
Sorry,
ReplyDeleteRepeat level: I could have put in a fixed voltage level where the envelope drops to before it re-triggers itself. I did initially. But, then I decided that it would be fun to be able to manually adjust the level. That way, the attack and release ratios remain the same and you can increase and decrease the repeat rate. I can still take it out if you guys don't think it's worth it. That would save me the cost of a pot.
George Mattson
"That would save me the cost of a pot."
ReplyDeletemeh ... meh ...
can the envelope be inverted?
Keep it!
ReplyDeleteI think its pretty obvious that there are a number of things already that make this different from a "dopefer entry system" clone. This is one of them ;)
Sure, the envelope can be inverted.
ReplyDeleteThe easiest way is to run it into a mixer channel and use the inverted output from the mixer.
The other way is to turn the panel upside down. Sorry, I couldn't resist.
George Mattson
I -love- repeat functions on envelopes. LOVE them. Thank you so much.
ReplyDeleteDoepfer can sell their stuff cheap because they don't need monney on Research and Development. They just "steal" the designs from guys like Jurgen Haible, Paul Maddox, Ken Stone etc etc.
ReplyDeleteOk now on-topic. I begin to like this stuff more and more!
Just in case anyone thought my 'toothpaste caps' post was derogotary - it wasn't. In fact George has made me realise that you can make usable, small modules and I plan to use this idea in some of my DIY stuff. Hopefully there will be unpopulated panels on sale to allow us to add DIY modules to a Matson system? I can see this becoming another standard.
ReplyDeleteGuys, don't lump all dissent into the troll bucket. People all have different opinions. Yes the communication can be more elegant, but sometimes it's not and sometimes it actually is but you can't tell in writing. Note that I will be removing any comments construed as hate. So far that bar hasn't been hit. Actually, there is one against the "trolls" above, but I'll let slide for now. The next one gets removed.
ReplyDeleteTry not to get too worked up. This is all supposed to be in good fun. In the end there will be a modular that many of you, myself included, will be very excited about.
The posts on the individual modules are meant to:
1. Let you focus on each module as they come out as opposed to the entire system.
2. Announce a complete modular system in just under a week (starting with the first functional module) - think about that for a moment. The entire line of modules, completely designed and ready to be built in under a week.
3. A bit of fun anticipating what's next. You will notice that each module is slightly more interesting than the last.
BTW, a note on trolls in general:
If you are watching a performance and some guy in the audience gets up and moons the performer, do you really want to move the spotlight to his ass? That's effectively what you are doing when you react to the trolls. And sometimes they aren't even trolls!!!
As for the funny troll comments, enjoy them. Some of them really are funny.
Only two days left. BTW, each module that goes up should be a small pay out until the end. It's not like you got a teaser on Monday and had to wait a few weeks for the next one. The duration for this one is extremely fast compared to other products being announced. NAMM anyone?
