Oberheim FVS-1 SEM Expansion

"this FVS-1 is the expansion for the Oberheim 4-voice synthesizer, adding 4 extra SEM modules and an extra output module to it and thus letting you enjoy an 8-voice Oberheim synthesizer"

  1. So what's cheaper... an 8-voice, or a 4-voice with an FVS-1?

Like I can really afford even a 1-voice.

  2. Same thing, no? As long as the keyboard & programmer accomodate 8 voices instead of 4. Otherwise, in rotate mode, you'd hear silence every other 4 notes you played.

But what a beautiful, midrangey expensive silence.

  3. I guess that depends on how much you are being gouged... What a wild price.

  4. 3000EU..... hahahaha

It's worth 4 x $500US for the SEMs and ~$250 for the case and power supply. There's no programmer boards and no key assigner boards so this isn't of much use to anyone with a four voice unless they have the parts or really deep pockets. Of course, you could always turn it into a patched out three voice like Kevin Lightner built for Mark Pulver. (which is now in my possession)

Sorry the pics are dark but I didn't have lighting up at that point.

And I suppose this patched out three voice is worth 3 x $500US for the SEMs and ~$250 for the case and power supply? You'd be happy with this price if it came time to sell?
From what I have seen Kevin Lightner is only for those with really deep pockets.

  8. Not that I feel compelled to share what I pay for synths with the world, but my patched out three voice was $1800 including Roland MPU-101 from a reputable LA dealer. My first two voice was $1200 from Brian Kehew, my second two voice was under $800 if I recall correctly, and my four voice from a local dealer wasn't too far off from my $500 per SEM calculation.

In regard to Dave's comment that he can't afford a 1 voice SEM, they're frequently available without case and PS for $400. If you're halfway decent with a soldering iron and woodworking you can have a nice single voice SEM setup for under $500. In my opinion it's one of the best deals going these days.

  10. Looking at what they offered to the seller, it seems that retrosynth's estimate is not shared by everyone around Ebay.
Pricing vintage gear is quite a personal matter, in my opinion, and laughing at a high price does not change things in the market.
I have seen Elka Synthex synths selling both at 800 euros and 3400 euros lately.
I read ads all the time for vintage wanted gear with "please no silly prices" requests on them...but I wonder how many guys who bought a Minimoog at 1000 dollars would aftwards put it on sale at 1000 dollars instead of the 1500/2000 dollars price usually seen around the web.
Anyway, considering that the FVS-1 on sale there is so mint, I would be happy even keeping it switched off (I have no 4-voice) and next to me in my bed during the cold winter nights :-P - Josè
