Pictured is a bent Yamaha VSS-30.
"The VSS-30 was probably the ultimate in mini lofi samplers, and this one is in pretty good shape, a little dusty perhaps. I have added a series of buttons and switches that have various effects on the sound. The red buttons affect the sampled sound (listen to the samples below) and the switches affect the preset sounds and arpeggiations (also hear samples). The switches are labeled with the effect each has on the sounds--don't turn your headphones up too high, some of them are rather harsh (you can guess which ones). The "glitch" switch is unpredictable, and in the sound sample causes the song to stutter and eventually double in tempo."

VSS30s are absolutely great! - even without bends - though those can add a whole new level too..
ReplyDeleteThe onboard features and ease of use of them (change everything in real time) make it so damn fun to play with. Kicks the ass off any Casio similar whatnot..
Sad to see these getting bent. They are ALREADY bent!
ReplyDeleteHook it up to some decent effects and the sounds you can make even with the onboard presets (altered with the available parameters) rival those of "pro" instruments.
The VSS-30 is the best toy sampler ever made, and much nicer as a portable synth than any Korg R3 or MikroKorg could ever hope to be.
This thing has real character.
