YMO's BTM w/ Prophet '08

"My band did a cover of YMO's Behind The Mask and I used a Prophet-5 and Multitrak on the recording. This evening I replaced the six Prophet-5 tracks entirely with the Prophet-08. The only remaining synth track that is not a Prophet'08 is the background arpeggiated sequence.

And if you're curious, here is the version with the Prophet-5 which was actually mixed by Tom Ellard:

I think the P'08 does a pretty good job. What I'm doing now, and for the next 2 weeks, is only play it. Then I'll turn on a Prophet-5 and see how I react. :)"

You can see YMO's version here.

  1. Great cover. The 08 sounds yummy.

  2. Some parts I like the sound of the P8 more - mainly the brass chords and the leads. I like the bass and beeps on the P5. Great cover of a great song!

  3. Hard to decide which one is better. They're both great. I do think the mix with the P5 is better. The balance between instruments the synth sounds and the bass is more solid. I like the choice of the P5 comp sound better than the brassy sound picked from the P8. Great song also!!

  4. Just try to do Poly-Mod with the 08.

  5. These are some of the first sounds I programmed in. I was really happy with how the brassy patch sounded (which I titled 'Behind The Mask') but the plucky bass hasn't gotten to where I really like it. The leads were just done in manual mode off a basic patch.

As far a the 'anonymous' comment re: Poly-Mod, the Prophet '08 actually has 4 independent 'modulators' which allows for a lot more flexibility the P5, P10, P600 and T-8 had. I'm guessing you're talking about specific sound effects such as the Bird of Prey decloaking in Star Trek III? I'll make an example of this and give it to Matrix.

You also have to remember why John Bowen suggested Poly-Mod to begin with and that is because the P5(10) lacked a 3rd oscillator. The Prophet '08 makes up for this by having four LFOs that can do audio rates.

  6. This demo got me really listening to YMO for the first time.

One of those things I heard a long time ago and hated. Now I don't know what I was thinking!

    Thanks!

  7. For sure , the original mix is better , but we can hear that the P5 has more attack , more bass , more organic sound, more bigger.

The P8 version sounds softer, cleaner......... but for sure it is cheaper than a P5........

    Great Job

  8. No osc->osc FM!! Such as on the P5 polymod section. Hopefully the LFOs make up for that.

  9. Like I said, its got four LFOs that all go audio rate as well as four seperate modulators which provide with more flexibilty than any of the older prophets.

In regards to that Star Trek III 'decloaking' sound, I've uploaded an example of this on the P08 here:

I don't think you are going to be disappointed. As far as FM, yes it can do FM. I'll upload more brief recordings in that directory as I work more and more with the synth.

I can tell you that I'm hearing discrepancies between voices in the OSC and the filter. And I mean this in a good way. Having slight and subtle differences between voices is what helps make the Prophet-5 sound 'organic' (as you said!)

  10. Be sure to do a search for YMO on the upper left corner of the site for more.

  11. I'm sorry, and I love my Poly Evolver, but those sounds mentioned sound way more harsh on the 08, and then again, the 2 mixes are so different it's hard to compare. I can not hear the bass at all on the 08, I agree with the former coment, Pro5 way more organic if not "vintage sounding". A Prophet 5 sales pitch demo to me.

  12. Hey, I'm not getting rid of my P5s :)

  13. An LFO that can go into audio rates is not nearly as cool as using a VCO with key tracking, mixable waveshapes, and PWM as a modulator.

  14. So DS has you fooled into thinking tis isn't an Evolver too Peter? You ought to know better.

  15. "people determined to dislike the p08"

they're all people who haven't actually tried it..
