Depeche Mode-esque - Why do you do? By Machina

"Depeche Mode type Synth Band from the early 90's from Glasgow, Scotland. The Band were called "Machina".

Unfortunately this is the only surviving footage on VHS. The tape had been stored away until Robert Marshall (the leather jacket wearing rocker in the video (and also the keyboard player)) dug it out and copied it onto DVD then converted by a friend of his and posted here on You-Tube.

This song was actually used on a demo tape and submitted to Mute in the early 90's.

Unfortunately the lead singer of the band sounded a bit to similar to another singer of a group that had been signed to Mute Records a decade earlier (no prizes for guessing that band)."

  1. Not to be rude to the people involved but I can see why Mute wouldnt be interested in another Depeche.

  3. It's taken a week or so though...

Nonetheless, it looks as though matrix was right to enable the per-post captcha protection in the first place (although I suspect it's much easier to crack someone else's Google account for spamming than make one's own).

  4. The singer does sound exactly like Dave Gahan, but the music is not quite Depeche.

The video is also exactly like early Depeche videos: highly pointless standing/walking around.

  5. Machina, interesting relic. I wonder why so many bands/groups/duos feel compelled to duplicate Depeche Mode and a handful of other electronic acts? I mean, rather than having a modicum of originality. Recently, I viewed a DVD, 'Synthcon '01'. It was a documentary of a music festival in Los Angeles, which involved musical acts which knew nothing about electronic music other than acts such as New Order, Erasure and of course, Depeche Mode. In all fairness, the above mentioned influences on these derivative, quasi-cover acts are truly talented and innovative. The followers seem to not listen to, or know of anything else!
