Alesis Micron Complex FM Pad

YouTube via Gtechture. This one has a bit of a Radiohead vibe.
"This video is of a Patch I made. It Is a warm pad sound with one Oscillator thats frequency is being modulated. The FM amount is linked to an envelope. The FM gives the pad sound texture."

And one more...

  1. This guy does the best Micron demos. Quite amazing really. I really love all the FM stuff he's doing. Is there a better synth for the money? I'm actually asking the question...is there?

  3. I hardly doubt you can buy a better sounding more capable hardware synth brand new at that price. The great sound, audio inputs, FM, all the modulation capabilites AND a sequencer for $400 USD?!!

I attempted to sell mine on ebay earlier this year because I was upgrading monitors and cutting out some excess clutter. The high bidder never paid up, so I ended up keeping it because I got enough cash together anyway. I'm glad he didn't pay because I put some more time in with the thing and realized just how awesome it really is.

I asked myself: "What can I do with the Micron I can't do with Reaktor?" The answer was: "Not lugging around a laptop, a MIDI controller and an audio interface." You can really get some full sounding freaked out jams from the thing with NO additional hardware.

IF ONLY someone would make a software editor for the Mac! WHERE IS IT? There's like five of them for PC. I've only found one for the Mac that seems half functioning/finished.

  4. I've been really impressed with these demos. I've played around briefly with the Micron before, but never got too deep.

It really does seem like one of the most impressive 'bang-for-a-buck' little guys out there.

  5. I can't help but join in with the praise of the Micron (with reservations about its oscillator implementation - a bit more prone to aliasing than one might think - but I suspect that the limited memory of the AL3101s is responsible for that). It's less than 250 quid in the UK... in synth terms, pocket money. I exchanged a buggy Novation KS4 for it, and have never regretted that decision; it impressed me so much that I didn't think twice about buying the Fusion when it came out either.

(We have Bret Victor to thank for the Micron; it's his baby. Very bright guy, even if he's decided I don't deserve to see his website. :( )

But even more than what you get in the box, I'm interested in the possibility of hacking / softmodding it. The OS is uploadable via MIDI sysex, without any encryption or anything (so it could be disassembled), the AL3101 and AL3201 are nicely documented by Wavefront... about the only bit of the system which isn't fully documented is the FPGA. Could be quite the project box, for someone with the time, tools, patience and inclination... :)

  6. I can think of one other synth in the same aftermarket price range that is as good a value as the Micron -- the Waldorf Micro-Q. The downside is that you don't get a keyboard (unless you have the rare keyboard model).

With the Blofeld soon-to-be-released the prices on the Micro-Q's will likely dip a bit. At these prices though, it's feasable to own BOTH the Micron and the uQ. Each machine can do things the other can't, and it's great fun to feed the output of one into the other.

One failing of BOTH machines though is that neither will transmit or accept knob data as standard MIDI. I've been slowly programming a Kenton Control Freak Live to control the Micron and it's great fun to have that instant tweakability. The red metal of the Control Freak Live meshes nicely with the Micron's colour scheme too. I'll have to take some shots of the two together for Matrixsynth one of these days
