The Matrix-6 was my first synth in 1986. I don't remember the box and I don't remember it ever being referred to as the M-6.

  1. The Xpander's little brother - basically with DCOs instead of VCOs and only LP response on the VCF. It's almost a modular polysynth. Programming via the keypad isn't fantastic, but it is possible; there are a couple of freeware editors. I had a Matrix-6R once.

  3. Cost, I think. Even some of the Xpanders were manufactured there. Does anyone out there know the relevant Oberheim history?

Of course, there are plenty of classic synths from Japan ...

  4. cost...that`s a good point.however, the m6 is an excellent synth. Mine has a strange failure: the pulse wave sounds wrong, when i play the 6th voice the sound goes "stronger" than the others, Do you know what is this?

  5. Matt,

There's a service manual and lots of other files for the Matrix-6 on Synthzone at this link:

    http://www.synthzone.com/midi/oberheim/Matrix6/

The two standard things to do are:

    1) Run the full calibrate mode. This calibrates everything, not just the VCO pitches. Sometimes I had a voice sounding loud or soft, and this fixed it.

    1) If that doesn't work, play the same note over and over. Listen and watch the decimal points in the display that indicate which voice is playing the note. You should hear and see which voice is bad. The first decimal point on the left means voice 1, the next means voice 2, and so forth. Then, look at the service manual and/or take your unit to your favorite synth servce guru.

The Matrix-6 uses a CEM3396 chip for each voice for almost all the synth audio processing. These are driven by digital timers and controlled by a microprocessor that generates the control voltages.

You can get the CEM 3396 datasheet and the chip itself here:

    http://www.synthtech.com/cems.html

Various other synth sites will sell you the chip, too.

That was a lot of words, but I hope it all helps!

  7. Matt,

Glad to help. I often overdo the amount of information, but I hope your M-6 is well soon.

    Some final thoughts ...

The CEM chip does everything from the waveshaping (to produce multiple waveforms from the oscillators) to the final VCAs for one voice. I suspect that either an external timer circuit on voice 6 is bad or that the waveshaping for the pulse wave (by the CEM chip) is bad. Maybe the CEM chip is bad, or an external control voltage or component is bad. Maybe even just a bad solder joint!

    Have fun!

    Peter
