Oberheim OB-MX

YouTube via rezfilter. "The Oberheim OB-MX. Sonic Fury."
Hopefully we will see more of these. The OB-Mx is a fascinating bit of synth history.
See these posts for more and be sure to see this post. Don Buchla was involved in the design.
Update: Be sure to also check out the samples in the prior posts including these from Brian Kehew of The Moog Cookbook.

  1. What was designed and what 'Viscount' actually made are two different things. Don Buchla is the genius that could have made this a killer synth but 'Viscount' decided to cut corners and guess what ? The synth STINKS !! Really BAAAAD. The best sound you can make with an OBMX is by smashing up the insides and turning it into a shaker/.

  2. I think you are confusing this beast with the OB-12 (virtual analogue, Viscount design). The OB-MX is an analogue BEAST capable of an immense sound palette unlike anything I've ever heard before (especially when loaded up with voice cards). 'Media Whore' must be a "preset" guy. LOL. Cheers.

  3. "Gibson Not Viscount"

Erm. NO - Viscount were the owners of Oberheim at the time the Abomination called OBMX became public. GIbson bought the company later.

Not in the slightest bit confused as I was one of the first people in London to receive an OBMX form the first shipment into the UK .. It Was and IS a HEAP OF SHIT ! ! ! - I did drop kick mine down a staircase in absolut anger and disbelief.

Either YOU have never heard the slack Arse sound that an OBMX makes OR you must be the guy trying to sell this sorry excuse for a synth !

    Beermaster LONDON.

  4. Sure man - you kicked it, you bashed it (lit.& fig.) and you threw it down a flight of stairs. We are now believers. Incidentally, I own 2 and wouldn't trade or sell them for anything. You must have been slighted or fired in the Gibson/Zipi debacle surrounding the synth's launch to have this much hatred for one of the top 100 synths of all time: http://matrixsynth.blogspot.com/2007/05/top-100-synths-according-to-a-z-of.html

Cheers, and clearly, to each his own.

  9. This is really a deep synth. Very much a true analog beast, opposed to what some people have said. Yes, it could have been better had Gibson not abandoned it. But it is by far bigger sounding and deeper than most popular analog and virtual analogs out even today. I think most people who have passed it off did not realize that you can move it from Voice Chip ROTATE mode (polyphonic) to a very huge UNISON mode (monophonic). Simply put MONO mode was labeled Chorus or Unison. I'd run to the OBMX before my Minimoog D or MS20. I'm sorta glad not many have one. R. Perez www.liquidzen.org
