White JD-800 synth - Gandalf

via Dave

"Hello...

Thought y'all would get a kick out of a Flickr set from today's adventure... took the afternoon to re-assemble my trusty, 16-year-old Roland JD-800 using newly customized white body work. The board was originally grey.... "Gandalf the Grey. Yes, that was my name. Now, I'm Gandalf the White."

Only a couple of you will know what a Roland SH-101 is, but it's a legendary '80s synth with a lot of similar hardware (sliders, etc.) to the JD. Gandalf was designed to look like a white version of that model. The design, paint, and screen work were all painstakingly done by Jeff at CustomSynth..... This bloke does truly amazing, magical things to synths. If you have any interest at all too see similar cool creations, check out his gallery.

Anyway, the JD is assembled, home, and working & looking perfectly... ready to "rokk out..."

  1. Gorgeous JD800!

...now you just need to replace all the LCDs and LEDs with white ones and disown those orange-eyed children. ;)

  2. Er, how many readers know about the SH-101?

  3. Loved the Flickr set, there's some very cool little custom details on the screen printing. Very cool Dave! Actually, I'm kinda jealous.

  4. Hi Peter... actually... Matrix is on a short list of email buddies that I sent that Flickr link to... most of them are friends and family that are vaguely interested in musical things but not necessarily synth dorks like us. This blog post contains that email text, including the SH-101 backstory, etc.

Anyway, glad you all like the pics. They actually don't do it justice, either. This is just a profoundly beautiful job.

  5. By the way Carbon... not only do I kinda like the orange LEDs, but they should probably remain anyway to match the orange display...

  6. WOW...! And how much this all costs?

  7. Very impressive! It looks great.

As for the display, I believe we had something on Matrixsynth a while ago about another JD800 owner who succeeded in installing a different color backlight in the displays. I kind of like the orange LEDs, though -- and I note that Roland re-used them on the V-Synth.

  8. This would've been a perfect white-n-orange companion board to my white Angelmuse V-Synth a few months back, but I just didn't like that unit and wound up selling it...

  9. Dave,

OK, I retract my remark. The JD looks fantastic.
