SMS-2000 Synth Expansion Box Wood Frame for Sale

via the synth hoax king Ken Elhardt on the SDIY list, the frame of the SMS-2000 is for sale. If you don't know what the SMS-2000, click here, scroll to the bottom of the page, click older posts and scroll down to the first SMS 2000 post. Don't miss the Bahn Sage while you are there. Some truly amazing work.

Notes via KH on SDIY:
"SMS-2000 Synth expansion box wood frame. If you build DIY electronics projects and want something a bit nicer than an ugly, unfinished looking plastic or aluminum box to put knobs/buttons on and electronics inside, then pictured below is a nice wooden frame. It fits a 10.5" by 7.75" piece of metal or whatever material your panel will be. See pictures below. Note that my router took a small chip out of the upper left corner as barely seen in the bottom image in the first picture below. Only held together by wood screws, so it can be taken apart and a refinished or laquered up for a glossy shine if one desires. $20 plus $7 postage for the lower 48 states, Paypal." More images here.

  1. Why do you call him the synth hoax king? I know that he makes really good patches on synths, but I've never seen any of his work "debunked".

  2. The Bahn Sage and the SMS 2000. The Bahn was a brilliant hoax. Everyone was drooling over it. It turned out to be a hoax by Elhardt. You'd have to be there to appreciate it. It was written up in Keyboard Magazine. If you search for Bahn here you will find some posts.

The Bahn Sage was all rendered. Well, the SMS-2000 comes out and people start drooling again, but... people that remember the Bahn Sage hoax question it. Well, the main argument on why it was real at the time was because it was not rendered. Brilliant! Elhard knew people wouldn't buy another rendered synth, so he created a physical shell of one.

That is why he is the synth hoax king. As for his insanely realistic patches and his programming skills, that is still open. Some people think they are hoaxes because he refused to share the patch with others, some think they are not.

BTW, as for king of the synth hoaxters, I am curious if there are any others.

  3. It's a fake, why put a piano hinge between the keyboard and synth module when you can't fold it in half. The pitch and modulations levels are in the way. It's impossible to fold it in. Also in the picture what is holding the synth panel upright?? The piano hinge has no built in spring unit.
