  1. At $100 plus change ER-1s are great tools, yeah they're not Elektron or Jomox quality , but you get decent beats, complex sequencing via the Song mode and still have a lot of money left over for other gear....I use mine to sequence and cross mix a Novation Drum Station with pretty decent 808/909 sounds and both units set me back less than $300 combined......the really best part of the ER-1 IMHO, that was not shown in the videos, is that you have TWO external audio in channels, that you can add to the mix and then gate them with a simple envelope and simple EQ . I send all kinds of crazy sounds from some Metasonix/Frostwave toys into those channels and I am very happy with the result.

  2. I'm with Brian on the Electribes. I have an ER-1 mkII and an ES-1 mkII and I use the two ins on the ER-1 all the time as well. I would like to point out as well that I did not see the use of the knob movement recording, which I find an awesome feature for repeatable tweaks.

  3. I'm always amused when the ER-1 is described as an "analog modeling" machine (or worse, as an "analog" machine), when it's so clear it's FM and sample based. The synth parts are generated by modulating one oscillator's frequency with another, and applying a simple decay envelope. There's not even a digital filter on this thing. I'm not sure if people just want to exploit the word "analog", or are simply ignorant about different synthesis methods.

Anyway, it's a fun little synth. I love my ER-1.

  4. some of the more inpiring er-1 vids i've seen.. might have to dust mine off and see how it sounds syncd up to my 727 and 808, if you think of the er as a percussive sound module rather than a replacement for an 808 or whatever, then it starts to shine, imho anyway

  5. I still think ER-1s are one of the best deals out there. I constantly find myself going back to it for its external ins and funky little FM-y sounds. It's also very handy for driving other drum machines that lack such easy-to-use sequencers (mine is permanently hooked up to my ADX-1).
Whenever someone asks what they should buy to start making electronic music, this is on my list.
