PCM Card Workshop for the KORG Wavestation and O1W

PCM Card Workshop for WAVESTATION SR and 01W Series

"PCM Card Workshop is a Windows program that allows the user to make their own PCM sound cards for synthesizers that are compatible with the Korg 01W PCM format. Since Korg has stopped making PCM cards for their older synthesizers, many people expressed a need for the ability to make their own. This program allows you to add aproximately 33 seconds of new sample data to your synth.

While making individual sounds to be played on a synthesizer is trivial, the ability to actually get them in a format that your synthesizer can understand is not. This program allows the user to create a file that can be put on a SRAM card so that new sounds can be used in the synth. The program must be used in combination with other products and is not a stand alone solution."

Update via paul8181 in the comments: "For all that are interested, you can download PCM Card Workshop via the internet archive at: http://web.archive.org/web/20030501131910/members.aol.com/wrkshppcm/

Also, to program the card, you will need a laptop running Windows98 (preferably SE - 2nd edition). Instructions can be found here on how to get Win98 working with SRAM cards - see the section titled "PCMCIA SRAM PC Card with Windows 98": http://www.synchrotech.com/support/faq-sram-pcmcia-pc_cards.html

Finally, to write the raw binary data to the card, you can download a program that will allow you a 15-day free trial (after which you have to purchase the program for a fairly reasonable price): http://www.tssc.de/products/cardware

Happy PCM-ing!"

Update via Neil Hetrick in the comments:

See this post for additional information on using PCM Card Workshop and PCMCIA cards with the Korg Wavestation SR: https://www.matrixsynth.com/2024/01/priming-pcmcia-sram-cards-for-korg.html

From my experience, the PCM Card Workshop software runs just fine on Windows XP. It's a great resource, so belated thanks to Mike Werning for creating it!

Cheers,
-Neil Hetrick

  1. i'll start to sample nearly all synths i have around here (multi sampling very very shorts of waveforms, such as prophet VS ...)
if anyone plans to do the same, i'd be happy to share my work with other interested people

  7. Anyone using 01/w PCM Workshop programs to create new samples? Any success stories? Any specifics will be appreciated. Own 01w Prox 88 keyboard, would like to create new wave samples. I know it's being a long time.
    Thanks,
    Jose

  8. Hi, yes I did (a test right now) it works on Windows XP as well. I am using MCE to write it to the card. You need a SRAM or Linear Flash Card 16bit without Attribute Memory. The last part is important, otherwise it will not work on the 01/W. The 01/W has actually a design flaw on the PCMCIA Card connector. It pulls Pin 61 permanently down, which means to activate the Attribute Memory. And that means, you do not see anything of the real memory - so the 01/W cannot find the data.

Another posibility as also outlined by the author of PCM Card Workshop is to mod the 01/w to actually remove or disconnect Pin61. But it is much easier to get the right card.

Also if you are using a linear flash card - ensure that it is Intel Type II+ or AMD Type C. Those can be written with 5V - hence with any PCMCIA card reader. Older Intel Cards can be written only with 12V and not all (esp. not the newer ones) card readers can provide 12V for erase and write.

  9. So, I need to get XP OS. Maybe do a dual boot just to run the PCM program. Pardon my ignorance but, what is MCE. Also, any leads on where to get the SRAMs. I wonder, could I do backups of my original PCM cards. Well, thanks for the information. Í am excited with the possibility of creating new sounds for my 01 W Pro X 88. Will like to hear from others. I wrote Korg sometime way back to see if they could provide the software they used to create the samples. They responded back they no longer had the information. What a shame. I love my 01W. Hope to hear more other users on their exploits with the 01W. Again, thanks.

  10. Back again. Found some SRAM cards but the memory speed was only 120ns instead of 200ns. Prices between $72 - 136. Also, found Linear Flash card for $92 but, it said that it needed a PC card reader with proprietary driver for linear flash to be able to write to it. The price was $400+... not good!

Need more details from those actually doing it of the hardware/software they are using to make the cards. Also, what cards they are using. Need clear detail (spell it out) to try to reproduce it.

I've in contact with other fellow Korgians interested on trying it, too. Maybe is futile...just giving it a last change.

    Thanks,

    Jose
