"The Small Stone is a revered phase shifter pedal from Electro Harmonix, with a most distinguished pedigree, harking back to the glory days of EMS, the groundbreaking british company responsible for such electronic marvels as the VCS3.
Engineer David Cockerell, first hired by EMS to work on early computer systems for music, designed in 1971 a very peculiar (and pricey according to long time user David Gilmour) guitar effect called the Synthi Hi-Fli, featuring advanced phase shifting and vibrato functions, along with that special EMS retro-futuristic look."
Check out Cafe 80 for more including samples of the DSI Prophet '08 running through the Small Stone.

I know Todd Rundgren had (has?) an EMS Synthi Hi-Fli. Is that what he used for the guitar processing on "Todd"? Circa 1974 recordings.
ReplyDeleteDon't know the answer to that one, but on the Utopia tour in 1973, Jean-Yves Labat used two Synthi A (or maybe AKS) boxes to do guitar processing. There's some YouTube videos of that available. It's funny, but his setup looks almost exactly like today's DJ tables with two turntables and a mixer, except that it was two Synthis.
ReplyDeleteTodd Rundgren owned the first EMS VCS3 (The Putney) in New York. David Gilmour visited him to check it out and subsequently bought one, but Todd, as usual, was always ahead of everybody else.
