NAMM: The Beat Kangz Beat Thang: A Neo-Seussian Overview / Demonstration
YouTube via gearwire
"Since the Beat Kangz know a thing or two about drum machines
, it's not a shocker that their Beat Thang comes loaded with some of the most convenient, cutting edge features you'll see in a beat box. They gained massive street cred working on the sounds on the Zoom SB-246, and they're given even more control with the creation of Beat Thang.
See more on Gearwire.com."
You might remember the Zoom SB-246 from this Winter NAMM 2006 post.

I'm loling at this thing and the way it's presented!
ReplyDelete"I Challenge any and all Presidents of our competition to a beat making battle. I'm ready any time if you got the ballz to battle a KANG!!!" - from their site.
ReplyDeletei've been ready for a week now. where the hell are these guys?
epic
ReplyDeleteGearwire and "beat thang". Marriage made in heaven.
ReplyDeletedon't hate !
ReplyDelete:)
check out more demonstration vids @ their youtube channel
I think it's pretty swell, that they just go and make something like that.. but that's me.

love it... these guys are fresh :)
ReplyDeleteright !
ReplyDeleteI think it's pretty refreshing to see genuine enthousiasm en joy in a product like this..
seems to me like a labour of love for those guys.
think it's pretty cool they just step into a market like that (mpc-type samplers)
but hey, everyone. please enjoy YOUR cup of tea.
opbviously.
whatever haha
Universal Service Bus?
ReplyDeleteThese guys are dissing all their competition, even saying that Roger Linn stole ideas from them after telling them his "sob story".
ReplyDeleteReally unprofessional.
I'm still curious about the machine but pretty much disgusted by their marketing campaign.
come on guys, tell us what you really wanna say
ReplyDelete@carbon111, where did you hear that? I have to imagine that most people know that Rodger Linn has been building & thinking about Pad-based computer interfaces perhaps longer than many of us have been alive.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see what he & dave smith are working on.
S&TG, I don't think a guy who makes boutique analog modules is the "competition" they spoke of. No offense.
ReplyDeleteThe Beat Kangz are the team responsible for the design of the current industry standard drum machine the "Streetboxx" by Zoom.
ReplyDeleteWatching the video is like watching a televangalist and the Home Shopping Network all rolled into one. Very mesmerizing.
@Moni
ReplyDeleteGo to KSS - the quote was by the president of the Beat Kangs on his first post. Another member was so outraged he made it his sig.
I was pretty much planning on getting one until I read the post by Aja. I'm still interested in the machine but have adopted a "wait and see" attitude...
"ZOOM and Akai tried to rip us off and........ ROGER LINN too after telling us his sob story about how Akai did him wrong. Do those blue lights on his machine look familiar?? Why do you think he decided to come out with another drum machine after all these years.... Maybe i'll tell that story on youtube one day." - Aja Emmanuel

ReplyDeleteTHC1138, i'm not offended, but i should point out that while i don't sell devices which have pad grids on them, i _do_ sell devices which can be used to "make beats," so my answer to their challenge isn't any less valid, especially considering i've been delivering product twice as long as they've been pissing away venture capital.
ReplyDeletealso they _should_ be reminded that when they make challenges like that, as a way of pseudo-ghettoristic machismo, which they think they can safely make because they think their only "competition" is Akai, that someone WILL call them on their shit.
so yeah, my hand-soldered bootstrapped-with-no-credit analogue gear against your SMT venture-capital-funded plastic ROMpler. let's rock.
Check this out yo, I'm putting chains on an LFO, so I can wear a clock, around my neck! What up?
ReplyDeleteSeriously, I think it's great when the musicians who use the gear get involved with its creation. Their marketing might not be your style, but it's getting people talking.
And it's pretty obvious that they are aware of what they are doing, and have a sense of humor:

Yes, they said that Roger Linn stole they idea on mpc-forums.com, too.
ReplyDeleteAnd of course Akai.
I get the feeling that this whole "idea" is just friggin blue lights.
Talking about stealing, i doubt they paid anyone to use this pad design which was unique to Ensoniq/E-mu.
does it come with a shamwow and a set of knives for 3 easy payments of 19.95?
