Geddy Lee and the Tom Sawyer "Growl Sound"

"Now, some people have suggested that the MiniMoog and/or the Moog Taurus pedals may be the possible source for the growl sound, but in the book 'Merely Players' on page 242 Geddy is quoted from an interview as saying an Oberheim synth was the source for the growl sound, but he doesn't specify which one. To find out exactly which Oberheim synth he used we need to look at three key pieces of evidence." See the full article on raincitynights. You'll find out which Oberheim as well as how to create the patch. Rush.

  1. I never thought there was any mistery about that sound - it's easily reproducible with several oberheim synths. I had that patch on my matrix-6.

    1. I have done so as well on my Matrix-6R except the way it is designed, in UNISON oscillator mode all the oscillators lock up together tightly and you wind up with this hollow comb-filter-sounding result. There is a way, however, to introduce a per-voice detune while in UNISON mode and then you can get as close to "Tom" as a Matrix-6/6R can get given the oscillators and filters it has.

  2. Yeah I know this article is about how he actually achieved the sound. But its really easy to reproduce. I have the patch on my Korg MS-2000. And a search on YouTube will bring up emulations on all kinds of different synths. Still, kudos for posting anything Rush related.

  3. Well I'm late to the party here but I'd like to know how you get that sound on an MS2000

  4. I know this is an old thread, but I remember an interview where it was suggested that it was "the new Oberheim" that Geddy had gotten just before the Moving Pictures sessions. Therefore, it would appear to be the OB-X that's getting that tone.

  6. Hey folks, I am the author of the Tom Sawyer Growl Sound article that is mentioned above. The link to the article provided above is old. I have created a new website that focuses on the synthesizers that Rush used and the article is now there. You can find it at http://rushsynths.com/The_Tom_Sawyer_Growl_Sound.html. Thanks! - Andy Skuse
