"EFM (Electronic For Music) Micro Modular 1.0 is free synth capable of creating some nice analogue type sounds. There are 4 Oscillators, 3 Envelopes, 1 Filter, Arp, Pan control, Chorus and Delay. If you have problems with understanding (in other synths) the whole Modulation Matrix concept then EFM Micro Modular is for you. It's main feature is well designed, easy to learn, modulation matrix."
Don't modulation matices make understanding synths easier? All modulation routings in one spot instead of scattered who-knows-where across the synth engine/programming interface?
ReplyDeleteYes and no. It does mean all mod routings are gathered together in one place, true, and it is a fair bit more flexible ; but it also introduces a level of indirection which may get in the way of a clear understanding of what's going on, and it can limit the number of modulation routings you can have going on. The way this synth lays it out, as a kind of spreadsheet, is probably optimal - most synths (hardware ones especially) present it as just a list of routes, which makes things more confusing rather than less.
ReplyDeleteAs regards the VST itself... neat stuff, but I can't help thinking that they are to SynthEdit / SynthMaker as a preset library is to a DX7. Not that it's necessarily a problem, of course; the DX7's relative impenetrability and steep learning curve meant that preset makers did very well out of Yamaha! It's just that if you're going to be getting that up close and personal with an instrument without really coming to understand what's going on under the hood, it just seems like a bit of a missed opportunity *shrug* - but I'm just weird, so don't mind me.
Windows only, in case anyone was wondering about this critical bit of information.
