Oberheim Showdown! OB-Xa vs OB-8

YouTube via NonDigitalTom
"Here's a side by side comparison of the Oberheim OB-Xa and OB-8. The debate still rages among synth scholars, and Obie fans in particular, as to how much difference in sound there is between these two. We decided to see for ourselves, and here present this empirical study* for your entertainment and enlightenment. You can draw your own conclusions.

  1. seems OB8/OBXa are more closed to each other than Prophet 5 rev2 and rev3.

  2. Wow, so clear. The OBXa by a mile.

(or, the conclusions I draw are scribbles)

  3. OBXa sounds ballsier in this video, on certain things and they sound about even on the others, IMHO. That being said...that's not been my experience as an owner. I had an OB8, loved it but sold it to go d*gital. Got an OBXa later, honestly found it (my specimen, anyway!) to be kind of unremarkable. Currently have an OB8 again and love it...but love the Jupiter-8 more :) Wish all OB-s held up better, tech-wise, over the passage of time. Through efx and eq, it's anybody's game...Thanks for the video, Mike!

  4. There's an update for the OB-Xa that brings out the beats/volume on it. I was also unimpressed until I had this service update applied.

  5. Aren't all studies empirical?

  6. This proves once and for all the OB-Xa has whiter keys.

  7. ahh, I'm going to own a premium last revision OB8 in the near future, and noticed Juergen Hable's posts about bypassing a 22hz lp filter in the OB8's signal path, which purportedly kills the fatness of the synth.
