RARE Early 1972 Minimoog #1401

via this auction
"Serial number 1401, it is the 400th minimoog ever made. The condition is near perfect, and original... The oscillators are the ones from the early/mid seventies. Not the very early discrete ones, and not the later ones that many were "upgraded" to. This mini was made before the buffer board, which was a common upgrade/modification... The solid walnut cabinet is original, and was professionally refinished last year. This mini has the clear pitch and modulation wheels that only the first several hundred had. The face is metal, unlike the later ones, and the wording is in a smaller font."

  1. Did the first few hundred have clear wheels? I have number 48 and the wheels are solid white.

  2. Serial number 1401 should have smooth white or ribbed white wheels. Only earlier R.A. Moog and Musonic models had transparent wheels. As for serial 48, that makes no sense since serial numbers started at 1000. Do you mean 1048?

  3. yeah, I just meant I have the 48th model D ( serial 1049 since they started at 1001).

Like I said, mine has the non ribbed, solid white wheels.

  4. From what I've gathered, the ribbed white wheels came later on, in higher numbered models from the mid 70's. The metal faceplate and clear wheels carried over into some of the very early moog music models as they transitioned to the newer parts. These are generally from early to mid 72', with serial numbers up to around 1450 or so.

  5. Just in case anyone wonders, I'm the original owner of this beauty and it came with these clear wheels. I bought it in '72, in Buffalo, after getting demo at the Moog factory then located in Williamsville.
