2009 Korg WaveDrum WD-X Performance and Sound Examples

YouTube via KORGTV
"The 2009 Korg WaveDrum WD-X is a Dynamic Percussion Synthesizer. It uses a hybrid sound generation system combining DSP based synthesis algorithms and PCM playback engine. Individual playing styles will produce different sounds depending upon how the head and rim are played, how pressure is applied pressure to the head, etc. This video show examples of playing techniques and how the WaveDrum responds."

  1. I'm not a drummer, but I just might try to be with that thing.

  2. No USB, no MIDI, no way. Ridiculous omission.

  3. Aww, no MIDI?

    Nevermind...

  4. How could you possibly play it by MIDI? It uses actual audio from pickups to excite the synth algorithms. MIDI note #62 isn't going to cut it. It's a drum: you hit it.

  5. What are you dumb?

You could control all events via MIDI CC, like notes, velocity, attack, release, etc.

It's a synth and like any good synth it can be controlled in many ways with MIDI.

Even old non MIDI synths are getting upgraded to MIDI. MIDI is standard anymore guy.

  7. I know how MIDI works man. I've been doing this for a long time lol.

Like it says in the video, the WD-X uses the actual AUDIO from pickups as a start in generating the sounds. That's why it sounds different with brushes, sticks, hands, etc. You can not transmit audio via MIDI in real time, thus you can not use MIDI to play the WD-X. There's a lot more to this instrument than MIDI note number, velocity, CCs, etc. can express.
