Synth Rorschach #1

flickr by gordonwatts

I subscribe to the term "synth" on flickr. When I see something that meets the bar I put a post up. Every now and then an image or more like this comes up. Anyone know why this one might have the synth label? I can of course ask the person that put it up, but then there's no fun in that. That a Creamware synth there above the doors there in the balcony? A KORG PS-3200? Actually, it looks like a Mattson Mini Modular.

  1. Seems like they are there for ATLAS which is an experiment at CERN. So "Synth" could be the name of a talk they are attending. Maybe RF frequency synthesis? Or maybe synthesis in the sense of bringing different ideas and people together.

I searched for "CERN synth" came across somebody who built a PDP-11 controlled analog synthesizer while working at CERN:

In my professional field (silicon design), "synthesis" is the process where a high level description of a design is turned into the gates which make up the chip.

Biologists and chemists have their own use for the word.

  2. The guy in the black jacket is playing a Montron behind his back and the woman next to him is smiling because she has a hard time keeping the secret of where those sounds are coming from.....
