A note on the Synth Babes tag: Obviously the tag is going to mean different things to different people. The label was not meant to be sexist or derogatory by any means. If anyone interprets it that way, my apologies. I only received one complaint recently in over a year, but that one complaint is enough for me. The label will live on unless I can find something better. In my opinion people are free to interpret it however they like as long as they do so with respect to others.
Update via Brian in the comments: "
hey guys! me and a few friends were just hanging out on new years day and recorded some impromptu things...here is one of the ridiculous recordings that came out of it ...not really mixed and definitely dirty! if you like it, there is more to come!". More in the comments. On my iPhone at the moment, so I can't easily link. Actually... I can! Pretty cool:
"two more songs, nothing like the first...just some ambient noodling between a bunch of people who set out to record a short ep in one day!

that is all, happy 2011 everyone!"
I adore the synthbabe tag.
ReplyDeleteWe should have some more fun tags.
Take a look at the label drop down on the right. Type synth to get to the section and scroll. You'll find a synth armadillo in there.

ReplyDeleteThe Synthbabe tag always made me think of hetero-synth-nerd shut-ins masturbating (besides the above mentioned sexist implications, neither very pleasant). I enjoy your blog very much otherwise.

Couldn't it be just "Women in Synth" ?
ReplyDeleteNo, it certainly cannot be "Women in Synth."
ReplyDeleteWe are all under the power of the Synth Babe, et al.
PS, I take offense to the "hetero," tag up there, you must call me "babe challenged synthesist," as I also find "gay," too constraining.
Perhaps the intricacies should be derivative of the music. Just a thought.
Hmm... I LOVE the tag. Please keep it. Every women, from 18 to 81 become a babe, a cool babe. When you play piano, you are a Lady, When you twist knobs on a Moog (or other synths) you are a Babe.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
While we are on the topic, as a non-cat, i am deeply offended by the "Synth Cats" tag also.
ReplyDeleteI am offended by synthesizers. How dare they synthesize. It offends me.
ReplyDeleteI'm cool with it, it's the content I sometimes oppose. Girls is great and promotes our interests heavily! However posting a picture of a girl in a posed photo with synth in it I find somewhat derogatory simply for the fact guys don't get equal treatment in that regard. If they are posted as "art", photos with guys shouldn't be exempt from that category then.
ReplyDeleteIf they can be found that is.. I know most guys would rather lurk out of frame then be in the photo ha ha. But in general, one of the things I like about synths is that the "im a girl, give me attention" thing is mostly absent. And in that regard, if they play, we should regard them as equals than sex objects. IMHO anyway.
Actually guys posing with synths far outweight the girls, that's why there isn't an equivalent label for them. Here are a few examples: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Just scroll through any days' posts and you should be able to find one.
ReplyDeleteAnd of course one of the top posts of the year. Out of the top ten most visited posts of the year, none had the Synth Babes label.
ReplyDeleteI always appreciated that all it took to be a SynthBabe was a specific chromosome and a specific instrument. I have found many more links to Clara or Delia than baseless "models holding synths" that people are probably assuming the tag is used for. Though that lingerie model chorus was pretty gratuitous!
ReplyDeleteBring on the Synth Trannycatbabes.
