John Chowning invented FM synthesis at Stanford. His work eventually made it's way to Yamaha and their FM line of synths. As many know the DX7 revolutionized the world of synthesis with new unheard timbres of sound and the ability to mimic natural instruments not really possible with analog synthesis.pic via wikipedia
