ReplyDeleteIf there's a woman pictured, which has clearly nothing do with synths etc. and is just present to make it nicer to look at, it's a synth babe.
If not, don't give the tag, call it by what it is, e.g. synth freak, synth jam, keyboard player whatever...
An btw, shouldn't we say "adult-oriented synth pictures" instead of "synth porn" as well?

ReplyDeleteIt's not really a pc issue even though I did allude to that. The label just feels played to me. I want something new and fresh for now. The other labels mentioned here were considered as well but each has something off about it. I want something a little fun. I just really like the sound of Synth Starlet for some reason and my better half agreed. In the end, who really cares unless it's offensive of course. I really like Synth Mujer as well, but I can see it detracting from certain posts and becoming more of a joke.
ReplyDeleteI've never understood why courtesy and consideration get labeled "political correctness" and disparaged. Anyway, I'm sure your solution is fine.
ReplyDeleteIn a separate move, if you're so inspired, you could make a new label: "hawt!" that applies to either sex, like the chili pepper on ratemyprofessor.com. (Kidding. Mostly.)
Starlets sounds like a breakfast cereal with my Little Pony's on the box ....man up and call them what they are.........women!!!
ReplyDeleteWell it never would have occurred to me to think of breakfast cereal (and hey, thanks for sticking that thought in my head!) but as the father of two young women I'd go with Synth Women. They're not starlets, they're women. It would be very weird if you labelled all men as Synth Stars, would it not? And starlet also has a sort of "this is the '50s and we're diminishing you to a smaller role in society at the same time as we're putting you up on an unreachable pedestal" kind of vibe.
ReplyDeleteBut anyway, you can safely ignore my humble opinions as I'm a guy and therefore not at all entitled to an opinion in the matter. What I"d recommend though is to ask, oh, the most recent dozen women you've posted about what *they* think of the various tag choices and see what they say.
Regarding synth women, someone left a comment stating having a label at all is the equivalent of having a race based label for different ethnicity. I'm a mutt myself and even if I wasn't it's clear that such a label would be offensive. I don't find synth woman or synth women initially offensive, but I can easily see it becoming so over time. It's also dry. I initially went with the Babes label because it was fun. My wife likes Synth Chicks more than Synth Women, but likes Synth Starlets the best. A friend liked Synth Suffragette or Synth XX for chromosomes better. The problem is each label works for certain posts but not others.
