"Running a simple beat sequencer on my iPhone (beatwave) into the new synth I'm building:

The magic trick is ring modulation! I have all the audio from the synth being ring modulated by the audio from my phone. This works really well with vocals and melodies too.
The basic effect is that there is only an audio signal when BOTH devices (iphone and synth) make sound... and the sounds are mixed in an interesting way. So basically you only hear the synth when the beat is playing.

For the techie folks out there, I'm using the AD633 analog multiplier chip for ring modding. Its obsolete but can still be found. Its super simple to use and functions really well.

Another cool trick I'm doing here is using a sample and hold circuit to modulate the pitch of the oscillators in the synth. The clock input to the S&H is coming from the beat, so the pitch changes somewhat in time.

The big knob on the left is a multi turn pot which controls the pitch of all of the oscillators in the synth at the same time."
