"First and foremost, the drum machine section of the unit DOES FUNCTION along with the tempo and volume knobs, every rhythm button, the variation switch and all 'break' buttons, allowing you to cancel different drum hits while the rhythm is playing. HOWEVER, there is a hum that drones, whether or not the rhythm is playing, when the 'drum' on/off button is pressed. I am not sure what is causing this hum. It does come from all three outputs (MAIN, BASS and STRINGS). This hum does NOT sound when the BASS, CHORDS or STRINGS on/off buttons are pressed. However, to my knowledge, you need the MTI footboard accessory to use the BASS, CHORDS or STRINGS function. As a sidenote and a warning, the MTI Auto Orchestra 16R accessories (footboard and volume pedal) are NOT compatible with the AO-1. Although, a youtube search will lead to certain homemade electronics guys that can build MTI keyboard accessories..." via the Strangler in the comments of this post.
