Yamaha PSS-680 FM synth, with multi-fx mod, PART 1: Item description.
Published on May 13, 2013
Update via Glen on Facebook: "My PSS-480 was my first synth in 1989, I still have and use it. The PSS-x80 series all have the same multi waveform 2op FM synth engine at their heart. The 480 and 580 are identical other than colour and patch changes, as are the 680 and 780. The only true differences between the 4/580 and the 6/780 are the extra sampled drum sounds, the drum pads, the pitch bend wheel, and different rhythm presets. Although the programming is simple (yet surprisingly versatile) on the synth itself, via sysex the x80 series have a surprisingly well specified synth engine with key scaling and multi stage envelopes amongst other things. You can download an old Windows editor from here... http://members.chello.at/~bobby100/ (go to the downloads section) As I say though, even with all my other better specified and more modern gear, I still use mine. Although it's kinda cheesy and dry sounding on its own, when run through a couple of basic effects it can sound fantastic. It's particularly good fun when played via my Andromeda (via MIDI) but with the audio from the PSS passing back through the Andy to make use of the filters and effects. It seems to excel at bass and pad sounds, although some cracking leads can also be found too."
