::vtol:: cryophone

::vtol:: cryophone from ::vtol:: on Vimeo.

"An interactive audio installation

The Cryophone combines two kinds of coldness in one artpiece: "virtual ice" of digital sound, generated by a synthesizer, and real ice in the form of frozen carbon dioxide (dry ice) that causes a boisterous reaction with water and generates an algorithmic composition on the basis of data gathered from the ongoing reaction.

"Dry ice in contact with water sets off a chemical reaction that sublimates the substance from its solid to gaseous phase. As a result, carbon dioxide gas is released and the temperature in the vessel drops drastically forcing gas bubbles to go out of the water. The sensors register these processes, sending data to the processor, which then generates sound.
