The End of the Akai MPC as We Knew It?

Tom Whitwell of MusicThing modular shared the following via Twitter:

"The Akai MPC is dead; no more standalone hardware, just iOS apps and controllers: http://www.akaipro.com/category/mpc-series …"

Think about that for a bit.

It reminded me of a post I put up on the potential end of digital hardware synths back in 2012, and picked up by Synthtopia here. That was likely the one post I regretted putting up most. I called out the potential impact the iPad could have on digital hardware synths as in essence it is hardware as well.

  1. I think it's fine.they lost their way between 1000 and 2500. They just didn't care enough to keep the hardware and os' s nice. It's also a beautifully niche way of making music that is well supported by a good second hand market, an active user community and some really amazing 3rd party hardware and software.
