Rhythm Machines: The rise and fall of the presets by Alex Graham

Update: An updated Rhythm Machines III is now available.

via Amazon:

"At last… an A to Z of drum machines. RHYTHM MACHINES documents the rise and fall of the preset drum machines that emerged in the late 1960s, and were manufactured in large numbers until the emergence of the programmable drum machines in the early 1980s. Nearly three hundred units are detailed here, with two hundred pages packed with colour and monochrome photographs of these highly collectable rhythm units. From Ace Tone to Korg, Roland to Yamaha – the book has detailed information on all units released by both the well-known and obscure instrument manufacturers. RHYTHM MACHINES is an essential guide for instrument collectors, drum machine enthusiasts and recording artists."

"Alex Graham is a musical instrument collector and drum machine enthusiast."

  1. RHYTHM MACHINES 3 FROM DECLINE TO RETRO DESIGN is out now (Feb 2018) on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk. Features all programmable drum machines released from 1990 to 2017. Has about 85 drum machines featured, a great companion to the earlier book.

  3. RHYTHM MACHINES 2 - The 1980s Drum Computers by Alex Graham is on sale on Amazon.com as of 1st August 2018. Has 210 colour filled pages of ALL 1980s programmable drum machines, including some prototypes that people will never have heard of. There is also a series called DRUMFAX by the same author which are essentially the same books (slightly less content for Drumfax 2, about the same for Drumfax 3) but with black and white pages only. They are about half the price however, so for those musicians with small pockets you can get the same amount of amazing information and research for pennies/cents...

  4. Drumfax 1 (A guide to Preset Rhythm boxes) by Alex Graham is just released, its a black and white version of the original RHYTHM MACHINES book but with some additional rare preset drumboxes, and all black and white pages so half the price. Drumfax 2 and Drumfax 3 are also just released. Great value for money, pretty much every drum machine ever made is featured in the series.
