014//Thread of Life - modular synth performance

Published on Mar 5, 2018 Alastair Wilson

"I see a lot of modular performances that aren't very musical, so here's my answer to them. I enjoyed making this, and will be doing more of this type of video!

Basic details:
- The higher Mother 32 supplies main melody.
- The lower Mother 32 supplies the arpeggio.
- The AJH Synth VCO supplies the bass (I change the bass note by pressing 'cycle' on Maths, with the End Of Rise output patched into the linear FM input of the VCO and tuned with attenuation).
- I'm improvising the melody on a Microbrute which I have modified to have individual wave outputs.
- The Maths in the large case supplies the envelope for the white noise hits. I plug the cables in halfway through.

Shades, which is the module on the far right, is controlling the filter cutoffs of both Mother 32s and the amount of randomness affecting the cutoff of the arpeggio. I have the bass volume controlled by the VC Mix knob on the lower Mother 32. All this helps me change parameters without having to reach through the tangled mess of cables - a godsend for performing this!
