Mutable Instruments - Marbles (random sampler) *In Depth Eurorack Demo Tutorial*

Published on Apr 7, 2018 DivKidVideo

"****PLEASE NOTE*** lots of the sections below make use of various other features on the module. Some contain feedback patching using random voltages to influence rhythms or clock jitter etc. But the timings will guide you through what’s in focus for each patch at any given time. Skip around to your hearts content, or grab good drink get your feet up and set an hour aside to watch the full thing. This will also serve as a semi-tutorial for random functions you’ll find in other modules so it’s well worth watching (if I do say so myself) to get the most out of other random sources too. Cheers! :)

INTRO

00:00:03 Hello!
00:00:11 Patch previews / What’s to come
00:01:32 Intro feature run down / What is Marbles?

T SECTION (gates/clocks)

00:05:59 Green mode - probability coin toss
00:08:48 Orange mode - random mult./div ratios
00:12:46 Red mode - linear beats / kick and snare like patterns

X SECTION (stepped quantized or unquantized / slewed random)

00:16:28 Introduction - 3 voice polyphonic karplus strong patch
00:17:25 X section run down
00:18:00 Step control (slew, random linear glides, stepped, quantisation etc)
00:19:32 Quantising stepped random (quick look)
00:20:46 Probability distribution aka the ‘Spread’ control
00:23:22 Bias control - probability bias and controlling influencing the random brain!
00:24:35 X modes - green, orange and red rundown

DEJA VU (looper, locker, pattern making dream catcher!)

00:25:53 Deja Vu rundown
00:27:42 Locked patterns and influencing loops with Deja Vu
00:28:20 Letting in new values into the looped pattern (7-12 o clock on Deja Vu)
00:30:17 Locking T, X or both sections IE. Retaining a rhythm with new CV values or retaining CV values with a new rhythm.
00:31:32 Influencing locked patterns with jitter
00:31:59 Influencing locked patterns with new step settings / quantisation or slew
00:32:19 Influence locked patterns with new probability distribution (spread) and bias
00:33:25 Locked loops to randomly skipping through locked patterns (12-5 o clock on Deja Vu)
00:35:23 Y output feedback patch - fluctuation smooth random influence locked loops

Y OUTPUT (smooth fluctuating random)

00:36:20 Stereo distorted drones controlled by the Y output

MAKING RANDOM GATES (X section)

00:38:21 Using Spread to create random gates on the X section
00:42:52 Influence gate high or gate low with feedback patching

SCALES & QUANTISING (step control & changing scales)

00:43:37 Scale / quantiser control, changing default scales and programming scales

AUDIO RATE (making new, unique audio rate oscillations)

00:47:35 T side at audio rate for new pulse shapes
00:49:26 Rate input 1v/oct tracking
00:50:05 Glitching waveforms with bias and varying Deja Vu loops
00:50:40 Jitter as a wave shaper … really cool!
00:52:09 X side audio rate modulation over T side and itself (feedback)
00:53:27 X side as an audio source

WORKING WITH EXTERNAL VOLTAGES (audio rate processing)

00:55:11Audio rate processing external audio
00:56:28 Step control filtering and bit depth reduction
00:57:29 Clock rate as audio downsampling
00:58:01 Deja Vu as a ‘sampler’ to loop and lock audio
00:59:17 1v/oct and step modulation to turn locked audio into a mini voice

WORKING WITH EXTERNAL VOLTAGES (sub audio rates IE normal sequencing/modulation)

01:00:46 Introduction to working with external sequences
01:02:10 Diving and multiplying external clocks with T side rate control
01:02:37 Adding slew to external CV
01:02:54 Quantising external CV & adding bias
01:03:15 Deja Vu locking and ‘sampling’ of external sequences
01:03:30 Influence sampled external CV with bias, loop length etc
01:04:00 Y output influence over bias - pitch shifting a looped sequence through a scale
