Korg Wavestate Tutorial Ratcheting / Berlin School

Waveformer

"This is a tutorial on how to create a Ratcheting effect on the Korg Wavestate. Ratcheting means retriggering a note or a step in a sequence multiple times. You could also call it note repeat. It is frequently used in the Berlin School type of electronic music.

Init Performance

Timing Lane:
- Step Type: Gate

Sample Lane
- Step A1: MS: Wave: Saw

Arpeggiator
- Hold
- Pattern: Up
- Resolution: Eighth note
- Sort: Off
- Tempo: 141

Amp Envelope
- Attack: 0.0013
- Decay: 1 sec
- Envelope curve D: 10 (exp/log)
- Sustain: 0

Filter
- Type: MS-20 LPF
- Cutoff: +46 (116.54 Hz)
- Res: 0%
- Envelope: 49.5
- Key Track: 16.5

Filter Envelope:
- Attack: 0.0013
- Decay: 1 sec
- Envelope curve D: 10 (exp/log)
- Sustain: 0

Amp LFO (ratcheting)
- Tempo sync: On
- Freq: 32th note
- Waveform: Square
- Intensity 0

Use the step wavesequence lane to control when ratcheting should occur.

We can use the Mod processor to multiply the output from the Amp LFO with the value of each step in the step wavesequence.

Mod Processor 1
- Type: Scale
- Input: Amp LFO
- Scale Src: Step Seq Lane

And then we set the Amp and Filter envelopes to be triggered by the output from Mod Processor 1.

Filter Envelope:
- Trigger Src: Mod Process 1
- Trigger Threshold 100%

Amp Envelope:
- Trigger Src: Mod Process 1
- Trigger Threshold 100%

Step Seq Lane:
- 16 steps
- Value 0% on most steps
- Step A2, Value: 1% (can be any value over 0%)
- You can add a probability here, if you like
- Turn on Note Advance

Step seq loop A1:A16

We'd like to be able to set the number of note repeats.

We can use the step sequence for that as well, if we set up a modulation so that step sequence value modulates the Amp LFO Speed (note subdivision)

Amp LFO (ratcheting)
- Freq: 8th note

Add modulation:
- Amp LFO Note
- Source Step Seq Lane
- Intensity: -8

Step Seq Lane:
- Step A2, Value: 75% (4 notes)
- Step A6: Value: 33% (2 notes)
- The rest of the steps: Value 0%

ModFX
- Type: Small Phase
- Preset: Small Phaser Color
- Wet/Dry: 16:84

Reverb:
- Type: Overb
- Preset: Ultima Vega Star
- Wet/Dry: 14:86

Sample Lane
- 16 steps (add 14)
- Enter + Step to solo the stem
- Step A1: MS: Wave: Saw
- Step A2: MS: Wave: Saw (Not too much variation at first)
- Step A3: MS: Wave: Saw Chroma
- Step A4: MS: Wave: Saw + Square EXP
- Step A5: MS: Wave: Square, Oct +1, Trim -5.8 dB
- Step A6: MS: Wave: Wobble Wave
- Step A7: MS: Wave_WS: VS119
- Step A8: MS: Wave_Guru: Pianoish
- Step A9: MS: Wave_Guru: Organish 2
- Step A10: MS: Wave_WS: 13_01
- Step A11: MS: Wave_WS: 13_13
- Step A12: MS: Wave_WS: 13_09
- Step A13: MS: Wave_WS: Krypton
- Step A14: MS: Wave_WS: OBTRESN
- Step A15: MS: Wave_WS: 13_59
- Step A16: MS: Wave_WS: VS118
- Enter + Step to disable soloing
- Note advance

Sample seq Loop Start: A1, Loop End: A16.

Control the decay times for the Amplitude envelope and the Filter envelope with a performance knob.

Modulation:
- Filter Env Decay Time
- Source: Master PrfKnob
- Intensity: x4.257

Modulation:
- Amp Env Decay Time
- Source: Master PrfKnob
- Intensity: x4.257

Modulation:
- Amp Env Sustain Level
- Source: Master PrfKnob
- Intensity: 70

Delay
- Type: Stereo/Cross Delay
- Preset: 1/8 dotted LPF
- Wet/Dry: 39:61
- Feedback: 48
- Timbre: -25

Let the Pitch LFO modulate the Decays of the Filter and Amplitude Envelopes

Pitch LFO (modulates Filter and Amp Envelope Decay)
- Freq: 0.070 Hz
- Waveform: EXP TRI
- Sync Notes: On
- Intensity: 0

Modulation:
- Amp Env Decay Time
- Source: Pitch LFO
- Intensity: x2

Modulation:
- Filter Env Decay Time
- Source: Pitch LFO
- Intensity: x2

Modulation:
- Amp Env Sustain Level
- Source: Pitch LFO
- Intensity: 70

Use the Filter LFO to modulate filter cutoff.

Filter LFO:
- Freq: 0.064 Hz
- Waveform: Triangle
- Intensity: 8
- Sync Notes: On

Use the Pan LFO to modulate panning.

Pan LFO
- Freq: 0.215 Hz
- Waveform: Triangle
- Intensity: +31%
- Sync Notes

The audio is recorded to SD card on a Zoom R16 and normalized in Audacity. Video is recorded on iPhoneX. Audio and video is synchronized in DaVinci Resolve 15."
