Oberheim Matrix 6R with ObiMagix6000 Controller

The Oberheim matrix 6 sounds the same as a Matrix 12. So why is it the 12-voice matrix fetches prices up to $15,000, while an Oberheim Matrix 6r can be had for 1/10 of that? It's NOT those extra 6 voices. 6 voices is plenty.

It's because the Matrix 6r has a notoriously hostile push-button interface. It was made at a time when membrane based digital interfaces were a novelty, and they were thought to be the next big thing. The result? Want to change an OSC? Menu diving. Cutoff? menu diving. Everything is a menu dive and to make matters worse, you have to enter in codes on the top of the unit to get to the menus you need to dive through! It's terrible!

But WAIT! there's good news. A fine fellow in Argentina began to manufacture a midi based controller for the Matrix 6r in small batches and sell them for $300. This gives you knobs to control the Matrix 6r, and you can push out awesome, LUSH sounds with little effort. No more menu diving!

And, that's not all! Another fine fellow manufactured an eProm chip with updated firmware he painstakingly reverse engineered against the stock eProm. This firmware update fixes another major flaw in the original where certain midi values would change very slowly (because they were designed with a push button interface in mind where your finger can't change values as fast as a dial). With the combination of this firmware chip and controller, you're getting the original, analog classic synth sounds with no fuss."
